Placed on injured list Payamps was placed on the COVID-19 injured list for an undisclosed reason Monday.

Impact Payamps was officially placed on the IL with no injury designation, but that usually means that a player is on the COVID-19 IL. Assuming that's the case, the right-hander will be eligible to return to action as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols. Right-hander Daniel Mengden's contract was selected Monday to provide additional bullpen depth.

Impact Payamps left Monday's game after getting struck by a line drive in his lower body and didn't pitch Tuesday or Wednesday. He was effective in his return, escaping a jam created by Kris Bubic and Collin Snider in the fifth inning before pitching a clean sixth. Outside of a messy outing May 27 (four runs in two-thirds of an inning), Payamps has been solid as a low-leverage option for the Royals. He has a 2.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB through 24 innings, and he's yet to allow a home run this season. His 3.8 BB/9 mark is too high, but a 3.02 FIP suggests regression shouldn't cause a drastic impact.

Impact Payamps was needed in a multi-inning capacity after starter Zack Greinke allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings. In his last four outings, Payamps has tossed 10.2 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and two walks in that span. It's an improvement for him to cut down on the baserunners he's allowed -- the right-hander now sports a 1.31 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB across 20.2 innings overall in 12 appearances.

Payamps didn't have much luck either, allowing an RBI triple to Tyler O'Neill and a sacrifice fly to Harrison Bader, though only one run was charged to the reliever. Payamps has a 2.08 ERA despite a 1.50 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB through 8.2 innings. The right-hander often works in low-leverage assignments, and he won't see a more significant role as long as he's yielding so many baserunners.
