INJURIES

Headed to injured list The Marlins placed Luzardo on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a lumbar stress reaction.
Impact Though he battled a stiff back in his most recent outing this past Sunday in Washington, Luzardo had been listed as the Marlins' starter for Saturday's game versus the Mariners. The southpaw evidently didn't bounce back as well from the back injury as the team had hoped, and he's since been scratched from the start and placed on the IL. Miami has recalled Shaun Anderson from Triple-A Jacksonville to make a spot start Saturday in Luzardo's stead. The 26-year-old will be eligible to return from the IL on July 4, but it's unclear if he'll be ready to go by that time.
JUNE 22, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Fans two in defeat Luzardo (3-6) took the loss Sunday against Washington, allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings pitched.
Impact The two runs charged to Luzardo were both solo home runs -- a first-inning shot by Lane Thomas followed by a fifth-inning blast courtesy of Jacob Young. While he only yielded two earned runs, Luzardo allowed baserunners in all five innings and mustered just two strikeouts. The hard-throwing southpaw has seen a steep drop-off in his strikeout rate compared to last year, plummeting from 10.48 K/9 to 7.83 K/9 this season. Overall, Luzardo has compiled a disappointing 5.00 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and a 58:22 K:BB across 66.2 innings. He will look to bounce back in his next start, currently scheduled for next weekend versus Seattle.
JUNE 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Career day against Milwaukee Luzardo (2-3) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing three hits and no walks with four strikeouts across eight scoreless innings against the Brewers.
Impact Luzardo completed eight innings for the first time in his career, blanking Milwaukee in dominant fashion. All three hits allowed were singles and he didn't issue a walk for a second straight start. The southpaw retired 17 consecutive batters during the start, spanning the second to the eighth inning. He's been excellent in three starts since coming off the IL, owning a 0.92 ERA and a 19:1 K:BB over 19.2 innings. He'll look to keep the ball rolling Tuesday against the Padres.
MAY 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Diagnosed with mild flexor strain Luzardo has been diagnosed with a mild flexor strain in his left elbow, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact It's relatively good news, especially considering that Luzardo was able to play catch Monday, just three days after tightness in his pitching arm forced him to the injured list. There is no timetable at this juncture for Luzardo's return to the Marlins' rotation, but there could be more clarity later this week.
APRIL 29, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Rebounds with quality start Luzardo didn't factor in the decision in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. He struck out six and gave up two runs on three hits and three walks across six innings...
Impact The left-hander surrendered a two-run triple to Patrick Wisdom during the third inning but otherwise kept Chicago off the board. The quality start is a welcome sight for Luzardo, who allowed 12 runs over his previous two outings and gave up at least one homer in each of his first four starts. Luzardo currently lines up to pitch next weekend versus the Nationals in Miami.
APRIL 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Tapped to start Opening Day Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday that Luzardo will be the club's Opening Day starter on March 28 versus the Pirates, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact With Sandy Alcantara (elbow) slated to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign, Luzardo was the obvious choice to take the ball Opening Day. The left-hander collected a 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 208:55 K:BB across 178.2 innings covering 32 starts in 2023. He should remain a fantasy standout for the Marlins in 2024.
FEBRUARY 27, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Perfect start to spring Luzardo struck out three batters over two perfect innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals.
Impact The 26-year-old southpaw got his spring off to a flying start, tossing 17 of 23 pitches for strikes against a patchwork Washington lineup headlined by Joey Meneses and top prospect James Wood. Luzardo threw a career-high 178.2 innings last year, striking out 208 batters with a 3.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, and he heads into the 2024 campaign looking to establish himself as a reliable frontline starter.
FEBRUARY 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Cedes three runs in loss Luzardo allowed three runs on eight hits across four innings, taking the loss in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat against the Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. He struck out five.
Impact Luzardo was knocked around by the Phillies lineup early and often, giving up a hit to every batter besides Harper at some point in his four innings of work. The pressure of the home crowd may have gotten to him since he allowed two wild pitches in the contest, one of which set up an RBI single by Christian Pache in the fifth inning. After Tuesday's outing, Luzardo is up to a 6.75 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 16 strikeouts across 14.2 career postseason innings.
OCTOBER 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Tabbed as Game 1 starter Luzardo will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact The Phillies' playoff rotation has yet to be announced. Luzardo had a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 34 innings over his final six starts of the season.
OCTOBER 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fades late in no-decision Luzardo came away with a no-decision Saturday, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over five-plus innings in Miami's 5-4 victory over Milwaukee. He struck out four.
Impact The southpaw blanked the Brewers for five innings before the wheels began to come off in the sixth, but he still exited the game with the Marlins ahead 4-1 before A.J. Puk served up a Carlos Santana homer that cashed in two baserunners Luzardo had left behind. It's just the second time in his last six outings he's been charged with more than two runs, a stretch in which Luzardo sports a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 34 innings. The Marlins remain alive in the NL wild-card race, sitting one game back of the Cubs for the final spot heading into Sunday's action, so the club could need its best remaining starter to come up big in his final start of the regular season, likely to come on the road next week against the Mets.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Dominates in 10th win Luzardo (10-9) allowed four hits and two walks over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win against Atlanta.
Impact Luzardo worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning but didn't face much of a threat otherwise. He's turned in three scoreless performances over his last five starts, posting a 2.48 ERA during that span and lowering his season ERA to 3.68. However, he's allowed at least four runs in four of his eight outings since the start of August. Luzardo's next start is currently projected to be at home against the Brewers.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard by Brewers Luzardo (9-9) allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks over five innings Monday, striking out five and talking a loss against Milwaukee.
Impact Luzardo coughed up a solo homer to Mark Canha to begin the game but it was Milwaukee's four-run third inning that really buried the Marlins. Luzardo had allowed just two runs over his previous three starts but he's now given up at least six runs in three of his last six appearances. His season ERA jumped to 3.82 with a 186:49 K:BB through 160.1 frames. Luzardo is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home this weekend.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sharp against LA Luzardo did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out six.
Impact Luzardo's now logged three straight quality starts, allowing just two runs in that span (18 innings) after struggling to an 11.68 ERA in his previous three outings. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.59 on the season with a 1.20 WHIP and 181:45 K:BB across 28 starts (155.1 innings). The 25-year-old Luzardo will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently lined up for early next week in Milwaukee.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Dominates Rays in no-decision Luzardo pitched six scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on Thursday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out eight batters in a no-decision.
Impact Luzardo held the Rays hitless through 5.1 frames until Yandy Diaz snapped the spell with a sixth-inning double. Luzardo got out of that frame unscathed on the scoreboard but didn't return for the seventh, having thrown 96 pitches. The left-hander racked up 16 whiffs en route to eight punchouts but had to settle for a no-decision since the Marlins' offense was unable to push any runs across the plate. Luzardo went through a rough stretch to end July and begin August, posting a 9.00 ERA and 2.24 WHIP over four starts (three losses) covering 17 innings. He's bounced back nicely, however, ending the current month with two straight scoreless outings during which he's allowed just three hits and posted a 15:3 K:BB over 12 frames.
AUGUST 31, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strong in ninth win Luzardo (9-8) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven over six shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Padres.
Impact Luzardo was locked in, a significant departure from his last four starts in which he allowed a combined 21 runs (20 earned) over just 17 innings. This was his fifth scoreless outing of the campaign and his first since July 4. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 167:42 K:BB through 143.1 innings over 26 starts on the year. Luzardo is lined up for a home start versus the Nationals this weekend if the Marlins opt to get by with a four-man rotation in the near term, which is possible with off days Thursday and Monday.
AUGUST 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Stumbles again vs. Houston Luzardo (8-8) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against Houston. He struck out three.
Impact The Astros jumped on Luzardo early Wednesday, tallying five runs on three homers in the first inning. The 25-year-old left-hander appears to have hit a wall of late -- he's struggled to a 10.59 ERA over his last four starts (17 innings). Overall, Luzardo's ERA is up to 4.13 with a 1.29 WHIP and 160:41 K:BB across 25 starts (137.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for next week in San Diego.
AUGUST 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Roughed up by Yankees Luzardo (8-7) took the loss versus the Yankees on Friday, yielding seven runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.1 frames. He struck out two.
Impact It's the shortest outing of Luzardo's season and also the most hits he's permitted this year. He served up a pair of home runs and now has surrendered five long balls across his last two outings. Luzardo fanned 13 in a gem against the Rockies last month but has now turned in three clunkers since then. It's possible he's tiring, having already reached his career high in innings with 131.2.
AUGUST 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans eight in loss Luzardo (8-6) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 6-2 by the Rangers, giving up four runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 5.1 innings. He...
Impact The three homers allowed were a season high for Luzardo, who hadn't served up multiple long balls in a start since May 21, but he still generated 18 swinging strikes among his 90 pitches before exiting. The southpaw has stumbled a bit in his last two outings, but his ability to miss bats gives him a solid fantasy floor even when he isn't at his sharpest -- he's fanned at least eight batters in six of his last eight starts, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB through 46.2 innings over that stretch. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come next week in Cincinnati.
AUGUST 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles against Detroit Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three.
Impact After fanning a career-high 13 batters in his last start, Luzardo was only able to punch out three hitters Sunday during 4.2 inefficient innings. All of the damage against Luzardo came in the third, where he allowed four hits and a walk as part of a four-run frame. The start ended an impressive run for the 25-year-old, who had allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven consecutive starts leading up to Sunday's dud. Luzardo is tentatively scheduled to take the mound next during a three-game road series against the Rangers this weekend.
JULY 31, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Dominant in no-decision Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings against Colorado. He struck out 13.
Impact Though Luzardo didn't get enough run support to pick up a victory, he was incredible in the no-decision and set a career-high in K's with 13. The outing also marked his sixth quality start in his last seven appearances, a stretch in which he owns a 1.48 ERA and a 55:11 K:BB through 42.2 innings. Luzardo will have another chance to build on his already impressive 2023 resume in his next start, which is projected to come against the Tigers, who average the third-fewest runs scored per game in MLB.
JULY 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Earth against Cardinals Luzardo allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters over four-plus innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday.
Impact Luzardo had been on an impressive roll coming into the contest, notching five straight quality starts during which he posted a 1.14 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB over 31.2 innings. That magic came to least a temporary end Monday, as the left-hander tied a season-low by completing just four frames while posting more walks (three) than strikeouts (two). Luzardo had issued two or fewer free passes in 12 straight outings heading into the matchup, but his lack of control was a major factor in his undoing, as he threw just 52 of 92 pitches for a strike. Given his recent dominance, there's still plenty to be excited about for fantasy managers who roster Luzardo, and he'll look to bounce back in his second start of the week, which is tentatively lined up to come at home versus Colorado this weekend.
JULY 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans nine in eighth win Luzardo (8-5) earned the win against the Phillies on Sunday after he allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out nine.
Impact The left-hander blanked Philly until the fifth inning, when Edmundo Sosa launched a two-run home run. Luzardo otherwise pitched well and combined for 29 called and swinging strikes as he struck out at least eight batters for the fourth straight start. The 25-year-old posted a 3.32 ERA in 18 starts last year and nearly replicated those figures during the first half of this season with a 3.29 ERA through 19 outings.
JULY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Blanks Cardinals in win Luzardo (7-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 15-2 win over the Cardinals. He struck out eight.
Impact Luzardo hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts (19.1 innings) while punching out 26 in that span. He's up to 120 strikeouts on the campaign, tied for seventh most in the MLB. The 25-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.32 with a 1.16 WHIP through 18 starts (103 innings) this season. Luzardo will look to keep his scoreless streak going in his next outing, tentatively lined up for Sunday against the Phillies.
JULY 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fans nine over 6.1 scoreless frames Luzardo did not factor in the decision against Boston on Thursday, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
Impact Luzardo was dominant against a talented Red Sox offense, giving up just three singles and a walk. He racked up an impressive 19 swinging strikes en route to nine punchouts, and he finished with his third straight quality start. However, Miami was unable to put any runs on the board until the eighth inning, preventing Luzardo from notching a win. The southpaw has had to settle for a no-decision in each of his past two starts despite recording a combined 13.1 scoreless innings during which he's posted an outstanding 18:2 K:BB. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come at home against St. Louis next week.
JUNE 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Let down by bullpen Luzardo did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Pirates. He struck out nine.
Impact Luzardo was stellar Friday, dominating to the tune of 19 swinging strikes on 96 pitches. Unfortunately for Luzardo and his fantasy managers, closer A.J. Puk couldn't hold onto the lead in the ninth and squandered his win. Luzardo is still searching for a next level in terms of consistency, but when he's on, he's among the game's most impressive young lefty starters. He will take a 3.77 ERA, 1.19 ERA and 103:23 K:BB into his next outing.
