Slated to be everyday first baseman Candelario will serve as the Tigers' everyday first baseman after C.J. Cron (knee) elected to have season-ending surgery Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Impact Candelario had already seen the majority of playing time at third base to begin the season, but he'll serve as the everyday first baseman going forward. The 26-year-old has recorded multiple hits in five of his last nine contests while posting a 1.156 OPS with six extra-base hits and five RBI during that time.

Impact The RBI were his first of the season. Candelario began the season by digging an 0-for-17 hole with nine strikeouts, but he appears to be finding a groove -- Friday's outburst was his second multi-hit performance in the last three games.

Impact This wasn't the start Candelario was looking for, especially with Dawel Lugo, Harold Castro and Jordy Mercer all options to play at third base. The Tigers will likely show some patience with the 26-year-old, but Candelario could really use a hot streak to make sure he doesn't shift to more of a bench role moving forward.

Candelario opened the 2019 campaign as the Tigers' top option at the position, but he largely struggled in his second full season with the club, slashing .203/.306/.337 with eight home runs in 386 plate appearances. Lugo received some work at third base when Candelario disappointed, but the former was marginally worse at the dish, posting a 65 wRC+ to Candelario's 72 wRC+.
