Shut down with oblique strain The Athletics placed Wendelken on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left oblique strain.

Impact Right-handed reliever Jordan Weems was summoned from the alternate site to replace Wendelken, who had been filling a setup role for Oakland. Over his 15 appearances for the Athletics spanning 12.1 innings, Wendelken posted a 4.38 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB.

The 28-year-old may have earned himself an even greater opportunity by putting together a career-best 1.80 ERA and recording 31 strikeouts over 25 innings last season, but the fact he rarely even sees hold opportunities caps his fantasy value.

Wendelken also stranded 16 of the MLB-high 24 inherited runners he faced with the help of a slider that he deployed more frequently than ever and against which hitters managed just a .115 slugging percentage. Wendelken's frequent middle-inning usage typically limit his hold opportunities significantly, but manager Bob Melvin could be open to expanding his role some in the coming season. "Going into this year, we have that much more faith in him, and he makes our bullpen a lot better when you bring in the type of guys we have here recently and still have a guy like J.B. that can kind of pitch those middle innings - if someone'sin the setup role, he can do that," Melvin said.
