INJURIES

Starts up throwing program Junk (shin) was able to throw a light bullpen session earlier this week and could throw a higher-intensity side session in the coming days, MLB.com reports.
Impact Once Junk incorporates all of his pitches in a full-intensity session, he'll move on to facing hitters before eventually heading out on a rehab assignment. After landing on the 15-day injured list May 31 due to right shin bone inflammation, Junk appears to be tracking for a late-June or early-July return from the shelf.

Marlins place pitcher Janson Junk on the 15-day IL with shin inflammation

Winds up on 15-day IL The Marlins placed Junk on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shin inflammation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact Junk becomes the third Miami starter to hit the shelf in less than a month, joining Robby Snelling (elbow) and Eury Perez (hamstring). According to De Nicola, Junk is projected to miss 2-to-3 weeks due to the injury, with a more definitive target date for his return to become more apparent as he moves through his throwing program. As a result of Junk being scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the Mets, the Marlins will have left-hander John King open the game in what will be a bullpen day for Miami.

Not starting, could hit IL Junk is no longer scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Mets and is being evaluated for a potential stint on the injured list, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Marlins haven't provided any details regarding what kind of physical issue Junk is dealing with, but he doesn't look like he'll be available out of the bullpen once opening pitcher John King exits the game. Miami is instead likely to treat the series finale in New York as a bullpen day, with a number of relievers likely to work behind King. Junk has been a staple in the Miami rotation this season, making 11 starts while posting a 3-5 record, 4.80 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB in 60 innings.

Earns third win Monday Junk (3-5) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on eight hits and no walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out three.
Impact Junk allowed his fair share of traffic but was able to limit the damage, allowing just one run while capturing his first win since April 28. Monday's outing snapped a nightmarish three-start stretch for the 30-year-old, who had surrendered 19 runs over his previous 16.2 innings. Junk will carry a 4.80 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 43:13 K:BB across 60 innings (11 starts) into his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Mets.

Roughed up for eight runs Junk (2-5) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing eight runs on eight hits and no walks in five innings. He struck out three.
Impact Junk poured in 62 of his 88 pitches for strikes Wednesday, but he might have been too aggressive in pounding the zone. The 30-year-old right-hander was tagged for a season-worst eight runs, and he's now served up six home runs over four starts in the month of May after giving up only a pair of homers in his previous six outings. Junk will be trying to keep the ball in the park during his next scheduled appearance in Toronto, where he'll bring a 5.07 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB over 55 innings.

Struggles in Friday's loss Junk (2-4) took the loss against the Rays on Friday, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four across 5.2 innings.
Impact It was a disastrous outing for Junk, who gave up two runs in three of the first four innings of Friday's game, starting with a two-run homer by Yandy Diaz in the first. The right-hander gave up a solo homer to Cedric Mullins in the sixth before being pulled, and Junk ended his day with season highs in hits, runs and homers allowed. He's allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts and now sits at a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 50 innings this season. Junk is slated to take on Atlanta next week at home.

Overcomes early struggles Saturday Junk did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 8-7 win over the Nationals, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings.
Impact Junk was tagged for three runs in the first inning but still managed to complete six frames while tying a season high with six strikeouts. The 30-year-old has now yielded three earned runs or more three times while limiting opponents to just five earned runs across his other five outings. He'll carry a 3.25 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB over 44.1 innings into a road matchup against the Rays next weekend.

Sharp again despite loss Junk (2-3) took the loss Monday against the Phillies, allowing one run on five hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings.
Impact Junk delivered another strong outing but was saddled with the loss, as he allowed the only run of the night -- a Bryce Harper solo homer in the third inning. The right-hander filled the zone effectively, throwing 64 of his 92 pitches for strikes. He has been excellent of late, allowing just one run across his last 16.1 innings, and he's now gone at least five innings in six consecutive starts. Junk owns a 2.82 ERA and 1.04 WHIP so far, though his 27 strikeouts in 38.1 innings highlight a less appealing fantasy profile. He will look to continue his recent success in his next scheduled outing against Washington.

‘The Future of Baseball’: Will Marlins’ Pitch-calling System Become the Norm?
Logs another scoreless outing Junk (2-2) earned the win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing three hits and issuing one walk while striking out four batters over six scoreless innings.
Impact Junk thoroughly handled the Dodgers' talented offense, holding Los Angeles without an extra-base hit. He escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning and then breezed through his remaining five frames, as the Dodgers were unable to get another runner to second base while he was in the game. Junk has won each of his past two starts, tossing a combined 11 scoreless innings during that span. The right-hander's lack of strikeouts (he has just 21 punchouts through 33 frames on the campaign) limits his fantasy appeal, but Junk has otherwise put up good numbers this season, registering a 3.00 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through six starts. He's lined up to next face the Phillies at home.

Blanks Cards in short outing Junk (1-2) picked up the win in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Cardinals, allowing one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out two.
Impact The right-hander got a surprisingly early hook after just 56 pitches (38 strikes), but he was due to face the top of the St. Louis order for a third time in the top of the sixth, and manager Clayton McCullough didn't indicate after the game that Junk was dealing with any sort of injury. Junk has given the Marlins at least five innings in four straight outings, but if his usage continues to be this restricted, he'll have a hard time keeping that streak going. He'll take a 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB through 27 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the Dodgers.

Impact Junk was mostly done in by a three-run fourth inning before allowing another run in the sixth. After opening the season with consecutive two-run efforts, the 30-year-old has now allowed nine runs (seven earned) over his last two outings. He owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 22 innings to open the year and lines up for a home matchup against the Cardinals next week.

Impact A three-run homer by Riley Greene in the third inning was the big blow off Junk, who tossed 64 of 99 pitches for strikes before exiting. The 30-year-old right-hander has seen an uptick in velocity this season, but so far it hasn't translated into significantly better results. He'll take a 4.32 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB through 16.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Brewers.

Takes loss despite quality start Junk (0-1) took the loss Monday against the Reds, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over 7.1 innings.
Impact Junk turned in a strong outing despite being tagged with the loss, keeping Cincinnati hitless into the fourth inning before allowing back-to-back hits that produced the game's first run. The right-hander settled in from there, working three more scoreless frames before Tyler Stephenson led off the eighth with a solo homer that accounted for the final damage. Monday's outing marked the longest outing of the 30-year-old's career across 38 appearances. While Junk admitted in a postgame interview that he didn't feel he had his best stuff, his ability to compete and navigate deep into the game was an encouraging sign moving forward into his next start, scheduled against Detroit.
