INJURIES

Throws multiple relief innings Odorizzi allowed two hits and struck out three over four scoreless relief innings in Tuesday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Rangers.
Impact As planned, Odorizzi threw bulk relief for starter Lance McCullers, who was activated off the injured list Tuesday. The tandem start is expected to be a one-time event while McCullers builds up his stamina. Both pitchers will be part of a six-man rotation going forward for Houston, which entered a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Tuesday. McCullers is expected to start Sunday's series finale against the White Sox with Odorizzi penciled in Monday to kick off a road series in Baltimore.

Set to pitch in relief Tuesday Odorizzi will work behind Lance McCullers (shoulder) in a tandem start Tuesday against the Rangers, but Odorizzi is expected to be part of a six-man rotation thereafter, Chandler R...
Impact Since McCullers won't be fully stretched out Tuesday in his return from the 10-day injured list, the Astros will call on Odorizzi to provide length out of the bullpen Tuesday. After that, Houston is planning to utilize a six-man rotation, which leaves Odorizzi in line to make his next start June 21 in Baltimore. Odorozzi has had a rough go of things in his first season in Houston, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB through his six outings spanning 21.1 innings.

Picks up first win Odorizzi (1-3) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in five innings. He earned the win Wednesday versus Boston.
Impact The right-hander got off to a shaky start by allowing two runs in the first inning. Odorizzi allowed only one more hit after that, a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts in the fourth. Houston was able to maintain its lead thanks to four innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen from Cristian Javier. Odorizzi hasn't found much success on the mound with a 6.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB across 21.1 innings this season. Wednesday was just the second time in six starts the 31-year-old was able to complete five innings. He lines up to face Texas next week, although it's unclear if he'll stay in the rotation once Lance McCullers (shoulder) returns.

Struggles in loss Odorizzi (0-3) was charged with the loss against the Red Sox on Thursday after allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two across three innings.
Impact After a strong return to the rotation following a month-long absence due to a right forearm strain, Odorizzi struggled with command Thursday, needing 72 pitches to make it through three innings. It could have gone worse, as all of his damage came from a three-run homer by Christian Arroyo in the second frame, but it was enough to give the Red Sox the lead for good. The 31-year-old has now failed to pitch five full innings in four of his five starts and just doesn't seem to have it this year. The shaky outing puts Odorizzi's season stats at a 7.16 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. He'll look to turn things around during his next projected start in a road rematch with Boston on Wednesday.

Effective in no-decision Odorizzi did not factor in the decision against San Diego on Saturday despite allowing only one run over 5.1 innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four.
Impact The veteran missed over a month due to a right forearm strain, but he returned in style by posting easily his best start of the season. Odorizzi got through five scoreless frames but was pulled after giving up a pair of singles and notching only one out in the sixth frame, and one of the baserunners he left subsequently came around to score. Prior to Saturday, the right-hander had failed to pitch five full innings in any of his four starts, and he still holds an unpleasant 6.75 ERA overall this season. Odorizzi is tentatively scheduled to next face Boston at home Thursday.

Activated ahead of start Odorizzi (forearm) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Saturday's start against the Padres, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Odorizzi missed just over a month due to a right forearm strain but recently made two rehab appearances with Triple-A Sugar Land, and he was up to 77 pitches in his most recent rehab start. The right-hander struggled prior to landing on the injured list and posted a 10.13 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in eight innings across three starts. His spot in the rotation should be secure while Lance McCullers (shoulder) is on the 10-day injured list, but he'll likely have to show better results if he hopes to remain in the rotation after McCullers returns. Right-hander Enoli Paredes was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.

Set to rejoin rotation Saturday The Astros plan to activate Odorizzi (forearm) from the 10-day injured list and have him start Saturday's game against the Padres, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Houston's rotation is inching closer to full health; in addition to Odorizzi, Framber Valdez (finger) will be activated from the IL to start Friday's series opener against San Diego, while Jose Urquidy (shoulder) looks poised to return from the IL to start Monday against the Red Sox. Meanwhile, Lance McCullers was placed on the IL on Wednesday with a sore shoulder, though manager Dusty Baker suggested that the right-hander would likely miss a short period of time. Odorizzi's spot in the rotation should be secure at least until McCullers is reinstated, but the former may need to deliver better results than he showed prior to being shut down with the strained forearm to ensure he stays in the rotation throughout the season. After a delayed start to the season due to signing with Houston until early March, Odorizzi posted a 10.13 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over three short starts before landing on the IL with the arm issue.
MAY 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Up to 77 pitches in rehab start Odorizzi (forearm) threw 77 pitches across 4.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact This was Odorizzi's second rehab outing, and he appears to be nearing a return to the majors, although manager Dusty Baker did not know if another rehab start is needed. The right-hander has been sidelined since April 26 with a right pronator muscle strain.
