INJURIES

Stingy in no-decision Irvin came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out three.
Impact In a matchup of rookie right-handers, Irvin battled the more heralded Eury Perez to a stalemate over six frames, leaving the mound after 96 pitches (58 strikes) with the score tied 1-1. It's the third straight quality start for Irvin, but he hasn't gotten a decision in any of them, and his last win came back on July 21. In six outings since, he sports a 3.15 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 34.1 innings. Irvin will try to get back in the win column in his next start, a potential rematch with the Marlins back in Washington next weekend.
AUGUST 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Strong outing wasted Irvin came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 12-3 loss to the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
Impact The rookie right-hander delivered his best performance yet in the majors and left the mound in line for his fourth win, but the Nationals' bullpen completely fell apart over the final three frames. Irvin generated 33 called or swinging strikes among his 94 pitches as he produced his second straight quality start and sixth of the year, and he'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Miami.
AUGUST 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Claims quality start Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in a 3-2 win over the Athletics. He struck out six.
Impact Though the Nationals are planning on monitoring Irvin's workload for the remainder of the season, he threw 99 pitches across 6.2 frames Saturday. He only surrendered a pair of runs, but both came on long balls as JJ Bleday and Brent Rooker each tagged Irvin for solo homers. Irvin has now allowed a home run in eight of his last nine starts and has served up multiple long balls in four of his last five outings. Despite his power troubles, Irvin owns a palatable 4.76 ERA across 90.2 innings with a 74:36 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Phillies for his next start.
AUGUST 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Team monitoring workload Irvin will have his workload managed for the remainder of the season as the Nationals deploy a six-man rotation, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact The 26-year-old right-hander has thrown 106.1 innings between Triple-A and the majors this season, which already tops the 103.1 frames Irvin worked the year before in his return from Tommy John surgery in October 2020. Shifting to a six-man rotation will cost the Nats' regular starters a turn or two over the remainder of the season, but if younger arms like Irvin or MacKenzie Gore show serious signs of fatigue in August, the team could re-evaluate the situation when rosters expand in September. Irvin has a 5.20 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 36.1 innings since the beginning of July.
AUGUST 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Can't make it out of fifth Irvin did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings against the Reds. He struck out six.
Impact After being handed a four-run lead before even throwing a pitch, Irvin never lost the lead but was pulled with one out in the fifth having thrown 94 pitches. Irvin had pitched at least five innings in eight of his previous nine starts but following a promising June in which he posted a 3.48 ERA, he's struggled to a 4.95 ERA since. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled for next weekend in a home matchup with the A's.
AUGUST 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Yields two runs in no-decision Irvin allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's win over Milwaukee. He struck out two and dd not factor in the decision.
Impact Irvin gave up one run through five innings before putting three straight Brewers on base in the sixth, ending his outing. He was tagged with 11 runs in just 15.2 innings over his previous three outings before Monday's decent performance. Irvin registered a 5.06 ERA across six July starts, raising his season ERA to 4.86 through 79.2 frames. His next outing is currently lined up for this weekend in Cincinnati.
AUGUST 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Serves up three home runs Irvin did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against Colorado. He struck out seven.
Impact Irvin was victimized by the long ball in the second, third and sixth innings, marking the first time this season in which he's allowed three home runs in a game. However, he still managed to get through six innings for the second straight start while logging his second-highest strikeout total of the season with seven. The right-hander has now surrendered five home runs over his last two starts and will look to keep the ball in the park in his next appearance, which is likely to come next week against the Brewers.

Fans nine in victory Irvin (3-5) allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings Friday in a win over the Giants. He struck out nine.
Impact The nine strikeouts were a season-high (and career-high) for the 26-year-old right-hander, who hadn't missed many bats across his first 13 major-league starts. Irvin gave up a solo homer to J.D. Davis in the top of the first inning and a two-run shot to Joc Pederson in the top of the third, but he otherwise looked sharp while recording his third big-league victory. He lines up to face the Rockies at Nationals Park next time out.

Abrams, Thomas homer, rookie Jake Irvin strikes out 9 as Nationals defeat Giants 5-3

Goes three frames against St. Louis Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over three innings against the Cardinals. He struck out three.
Impact Irvin struggled to get through the Cardinals' rotation, getting pulled after tossing 79 pitches in three innings of work. All of the damage came in the second inning, where Irvin allowed a solo home run to Alec Burleson and a triple to Brendan Donovan during the frame. Though Irvin owns a 4.96 ERA on the year, Saturday's start marked his first outing allowing more than three earned runs since May 30. However, he's only pitched six innings twice in that stretch.
JULY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Carried to second win Irvin (2-5) picked up the win Saturday, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in an 8-3 victory over the Rangers. He struck out one.
Impact The right-hander was far from dominant, but Washington's offense handed Irvin an 8-0 lead before Texas finally got on the board in the fourth inning. It's the 26-year-old rookie's first win in two months, but he's been giving the Nats reliable innings lately, posting a 3.69 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over six starts since the beginning of June despite a mediocre 19:11 K:BB through 31.2 frames. Irvin may face some workload concerns in the second half -- he's thrown 81 innings already in 2023 between Triple-A and the majors but tossed only 103.1 innings in the minors last year -- but he appears to be firming up his grip on a rotation spot.

Takes fifth loss Irvin (1-5) yielded three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings Monday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Reds.
Impact Most of the damage against Irvin came in the fourth inning on Joey Votto's two-run shot. After posting a 5.67 ERA through his first six outings, Irvin owns a 3.71 ERA since the start of June. However, he's lost five straight decisions since his last win May 8. Irvin will carry a 4.70 ERA into his next outing, which is projected to be at home against the Rangers this weekend.
JULY 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Takes no-decision Tuesday Irvin allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to take a no-decision Tuesday versus the Mariners.
Impact Irvin started off shaky, as Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run home in the first inning. After that, Irvin settled down and came up an out short of a quality start. The right-hander's winless stretch is up to eight starts, and he's still sitting on a mediocre 4.72 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:25 K:BB through 47.2 innings across 10 starts this season. Irvin is projected for a challenging home start versus the Reds next week.
JUNE 28, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Dealt tough loss Irvin (1-4) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Diamondbacks after he gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six.
Impact Irvin threw 61 of his 87 pitches for strikes and didn't allow any extra-base hits, but Arizona still scratched across single tallies in the first and fourth innings. The right-hander has a 4.71 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through nine starts this year, though he's been better in his past two outings with just two earned runs allowed.
JUNE 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Stingy in no-decision Irvin didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Marlins, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.
Impact The right-hander hadn't pitched since June 6 in order to work on some mechanical adjustments, and the tweaks paid immediate dividends as Irvin put together his best performance since he delivered a quality start against the Giants on May 8. He still wasn't particularly efficient however, throwing 88 pitches (55 strikes) before exiting with the score tied 1-1. Irvin's 5.25 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 27:22 K:BB through his first 36 big-league innings remain unimpressive, but the rebuilding Nationals don't have any better options for their rotation. He'll try to take another step forward in his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Diamondbacks.

Won't start Tuesday Irvin will not start Tuesday's game versus Houston, Derrian Carter of MLB.com reports.
Impact Irvin will be skipped in the rotation with Washington taking advantage of an off-day to move up their starters. Patrick Corbin will get the ball instead Tuesday with Josiah Gray now scheduled for Wednesday and MacKenzie Gore slated to start the series finale come Thursday.
JUNE 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles versus Diamondbacks Irvin did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over four innings against Arizona. He struck out one.
Impact After bursting onto the scene with one run allowed across his first two starts (10.2 innings), Irvin has slowed up considerably, piling up three losses with an 8.85 ERA and a 15:13 K/BB over 20.1 innings (five starts) since. Though he has matched up against some powerful offenses in the Mets, Padres and Dodgers over that five start stretch, Irvin hasn't shown much to give managers hope for a turnaround. He is lined up for another tough start on the road against Atlanta this weekend.
JUNE 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Falters against Dodgers Irvin (1-3) took the loss Tuesday versus the Dodgers, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings.
Impact Irvin contained his struggles to the second and third innings, but the damage was too much for the Nationals to overcome. He's lost three of his last four outings, and this was just the second time in six starts Irvin's been able to finish five frames. He's at a 5.67 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 22:17 K:BB through 27 innings. With a 5.7 BB/9 and four home runs surrendered in his last three appearances, there's not much to like with the right-hander. He's projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks in his next outing.
MAY 31, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Lasts four innings Thursday Irvin did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over 4 innings against San Diego. He struck out four.
Impact It's a step in the right direction for Irvin after he allowed 10 runs in 7.1 innings over his previous two outings. Still, the rookie right-hander only made it through four innings after throwing 76 pitches. Irvin is 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 19:16 K:BB through his first five major-league starts (22 innings).
MAY 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Mauled by Tigers Irvin (1-2) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks over 2.2 innings as the Nationals were downed 8-6 by the Tigers. He struck out one.
Impact It was a brutal outing for the rookie right-hander, who served up two homers to a light-hitting Detroit lineup that wound up going yard four times in total on the night. Irvin now carries a 5.50 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB through 18 innings over his first four big-league starts, but the Nats don't have any clearly better rotation options in the minors. If he gets another turn, it will likely come at home next week against the Padres.
MAY 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Rookie Jake Irvin struggles, and Nats' late rally falls short vs. Tigers The right-hander fails to make it out of the third inning. The Nationals' offense came alive late in an 8-6 loss at home.
