INJURIES

Season-long outing in seventh win Irvin (2-7) took the loss against the Mets on Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out six.
Impact Most of the damage came during New York's three-run fourth inning, and three of Irvin's hits allowed on the afternoon went for extra bases. The right-hander may have turned in his longest outing of the season Sunday, but he remains without a single quality start through 15 appearances on the year. Irvin, who has been taken deep at least once in each of his last four starts, will bring a 5.80 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 72:31 K:BB over 71.1 innings into his next scheduled outing in Miami.

Roughed up by Cubbies Irvin (2-6) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on four hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as the Nationals were downed 8-6 by the Cubs. He struck out four.
Impact After a scoreless top of the first inning, Chicago tagged Irvin for runs in each of the next three frames before the right-hander got the hook after 88 pitches (56 strikes). Irvin has made three starts since coming off the IL in late July, and he's surrendered five runs in two of them while serving up four homers in 13.2 innings, including a solo shot by Pete Crow-Armstrong on Tuesday. Irvin will try to bounce back in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend against the Mets.

No-decision vs. Philadelphia Irvin did not factor into Wednesday's extra-innings game against the Phillies, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings.
Impact Irvin's start Wednesday was far better than his prior outing against Atlanta this past Thursday, which was his first appearance since late May after being activated from the IL. Both of the runs he gave up came in the second inning, including a leadoff homer by Luis Arraez, but Irvin faced the minimum number of batters in four of the other six frames he pitched in. He'll take a 5.37 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 62 innings into his next start, which is lined up for next week at home against the Cubs, in what could be the first of a two-start week for the 29-year-old right-hander.

Ineffective in return Irvin (2-5) took the loss Thursday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He struck out one.
Impact Irvin cruised through three scoreless innings initially, but he wasn't able to record an out in the sixth frame after issuing a pair of free passes. The right-hander missed over two months of action after working his way back from a right shoulder strain, so he likely had some rust to shake off in his first appearance at the major-league level since late May. Irvin is set to take a lackluster 5.56 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 59:24 K:BB over 56.2 innings into a tough road matchup against the division-rival Phillies.

Activated ahead of Thursday's start The Nationals activated Irvin (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Impact Irvin is slated to rejoin the Nationals' rotation with a start Thursday in Atlanta. It will be his first outing at the big-league level since late May, as Irvin has been working his way back from a right shoulder strain. Irvin made three rehab starts and topped out at 58 pitches, so he will be limited from a workload perspective Thursday.

Impact Irvin has been shelved since late May while working his way back from a right shoulder strain. He pitched well in three rehab starts, covering 11.1 shutout frames with a 12:1 K:BB and just two hits allowed. Irvin authored a 5.23 ERA in 11 starts before getting hurt, and his leash for a rotation spot should not be long.
JULY 29 • ROTOWIRE
On cusp of IL return Irvin (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one walk and no hits over 3.2 scoreless innings in a rehab start Friday with Double-A Harrisburg. He also hit a batter.
Impact Irvin built up to 63 pitches (38 strikes) in the third start of his rehab assignment, during which he's posted a stellar 12:0 K:BB while permitting just two hits in 11.1 scoreless frames between stops with Harrisburg and the Nationals' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. Per MLB.com, Irvin returned to Washington to throw a bullpen session Monday, and while the club has yet to announce his next step, he appears likely to return from the 60-day injured list to start Thursday's series opener in Atlanta. Washington has already named its starters for the final three games of the series but is listing Thursday as "TBA," according to Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Covers 4.2 innings in rehab start Irvin (shoulder) struck out five and allowed one hit and no walks over 4.2 scoreless innings Sunday in a rehab start with Double-A Harrisburg.
Impact Making the second start of his rehab assignment, Irvin built up to 51 pitches (35 strikes) while facing one batter over the minimum. The right-hander has looked strong in the minors thus far as he works his way back from a shoulder strain, as he's yet to allow a run and has posted an 8:0 K:BB across 7.2 innings. He'll likely need to get stretched out to around 70-to-80 pitches over the course of one or two more rehab starts before returning from the 60-day injured list.

Shifted to 60-day injured list The Nationals transferred Irvin (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list July 10.
Impact Coming back from a right shoulder strain, Irvin began a rehab assignment Monday with three scoreless innings in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. Irvin will need additional rehab appearances, likely at a higher affiliate, before the Nationals consider re-inserting him into their rotation.
