Hurls five innings in loss
Woodford (2-2) took the loss against Cincinnati on Saturday, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
Impact
The right-hander kept the Cardinals in the game through his five frames, but he was outgunned by Reds starter Luis Castillo. Woodford induced only six swinging strikes and tallied just two strikeouts, yet he retired eight of the final nine batters he faced and was able to limit the damage against him to three runs. He'll carry a 4.25 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively slated to come at home against Minnesota next weekend.

Notches second win
Woodford (2-1) allowed one run on six hits over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over the Cubs.
Impact
Woodford cruised through four shutout innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He found himself in a bases-loaded jam with no outs after allowing three straight singles but managed to escape the threat with just one run scoring against him. It was his first start of the season and he turned in a very impressive outing, lowering his season ERA to 4.06 through 31 innings. Woodford is projected to take the mound in Cincinnati this weekend.

Called up for first 2021 start
The Cardinals recalled Woodford from Triple-A Memphis ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Cubs in St. Louis.
Impact
Outfielder Lars Nootbaar was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move. Woodford's previous 17 appearances with the big club came as a reliever, but he's spent the past three weeks getting stretched out for starting duty in the minors. In his most recent outing July 13 against Norfolk, Woodford covered five innings and tossed 83 pitches, so he shouldn't face any significant restrictions with his workload Monday. Woodford tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn set to come Saturday in Cincinnati.

Joining rotation
Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Woodford will be called up from Triple-A Memphis to start Monday's game against the Cubs, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Woodford will step into the rotation for his second career big-league start after getting stretched out in the minors following his June 28 demotion from the big club. The 24-year-old right-hander turned in mediocre results while working out of the St. Louis bullpen earlier this season, but he was sharper in his most recent two starts at Memphis. He covered 10 innings between the two outings while allowing only three runs (two earned) on seven hits and five walks. Woodford should be in store for a two-start week, with his second turn likely to come Saturday in Cincinnati.

Optioned to Triple-A
Woodford was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Impact
Woodford struggled during the Cardinals' weekend series against the Pirates and allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one in two innings across two relief appearances. The right-hander will be stretched out with the Triple-A club and could be an option to rejoin the big-league club as a starter at some point, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Left-hander Brandon Waddell was recalled as part of a corresponding move.

Takes loss Friday
Woodford (1-1) took the loss in a defeat at the hands of the Pirates on Friday, allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk while failing to record an out in the fifth inning.
Impact
Woodford entered with one out in the fifth and the score knotted at 4-4, and he ultimately allowed an RBI single to Jacob Stallings that made him the pitcher of record. The right-hander has been particularly hittable of late, giving up an earned run in five of his last six appearances and seeing his ERA balloon from 3.18 to 4.24 during that span.

Grabs dominant first win
Woodford (1-0) was credited with the win in a victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday, firing 2.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and recorded six strikeouts.
Impact
Woodford's final line tells the tale of how dominant he was, with the right-hander throwing 24 of his 33 pitches for strikes and notching eight swinging strikes along the way. Woodford has given up multiple earned runs in two of seven appearances, but he's pitched scoreless ball across his other five outings on his way to a 3.65 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 12.1 innings.
