Filling in for injured Tatis Kim will bat seventh and play shortstop Tuesday against the Giants.

Impact Kim's role at the start of the season was unclear, as the Padres had no obvious place to get him regular at-bats. He's suddenly a far more important piece of the team's roster with Fernando Tatis Jr. set to miss an extended period with a shoulder injury. It remains to be seen whether or not he's a true everyday shortstop in Tatis' absence, but the injury should certainly open up significantly more playing time for Kim. He hit .306 with 30 homers and 23 steals in his final season before making the jump from Korea and could be a cross-category producer for fantasy teams if he gets into the lineup on a regular basis.

Collects first big-league hit Kim went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Impact Making his first start of the regular season, Kim knocked a single to left field in the first inning to plate Wil Myers and give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Both the hit and RBI were career MLB firsts for Kim, who came over to the majors this winter following a string of standout seasons in the KBO. The 25-year-old will likely play all over the field during the campaign as the Padres explore ways to get his bat into the lineup.

Making first career start Kim will make his first career major-league start Saturday against the Diamondbacks, batting sixth and playing second base.

Impact Kim sat for both of the Padres' first two games, finding himself on the bench against both a lefty and a righty. Just how often he'll get into the lineup this season may take some time to figure out. He may make most of his starts early on against southpaws like Saturday's starter Caleb Smith. Jake Cronenworth will slide to first base to make room for him Saturday, with Eric Hosmer getting the day off.

Impact The Padres gave Kim $28 million in December, suggesting that they saw him as capable of playing a fairly important role at the MLB level. So far, he's found himself on the bench both against lefty Madison Bumgarner and righty Merrill Kelly, a pitcher he squared off against for four seasons in Korea. Kim was expected to battle for at-bats as a utility man with Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar this season, but the Padres will trot out Cronenworth at second base and Profar in left field in both of their first two games. Kim will surely find himself in the lineup eventually, but it doesn't look like he's in line for a significant role right out of the gate.

Jake Cronenworth is also being discussed as an outfield option, and each player may ultimately end up bouncing around the field a bit during the campaign.

Signs with San Diego Kim reached a deal with the Padres on Monday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Impact The 25-year-old was an all-around star in Korea, hitting .306/.397/.523 with 30 homers and 23 steals this past season, all while primarily playing shortstop. There's a Fernando-Tatis-shaped obstacle preventing him from playing that position for the Padres, however, with Manny Machado blocking third base, the other spot at which he's spent a fair amount of time. San Diego presumably wouldn't have outbid the rest of the league for his services without the intention of having him in the lineup on a regular basis somewhere, though, so it's likely he factors into the picture at second base or possibly even in the outfield. While Kim's all-around dominance in Korea probably translates more to all-around competency at the MLB level, he's still quite likely to be a useful option for the Padres and fantasy players whenever he's on the field.
