INJURIES

Activated from 60-day IL The Mariners activated Santos (lat) from the 60-day injured list Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Santos has been sidelined all season while recovering from a right lat strain. He made jus two rehab appearances, striking out a pair of two scoreless frames. Santos reportedly reached 99 mph on the radar gun in his last outing, helping to convince the Mariners that he was ready to go. The 24-year-old should eventually find himself in high-leverage situations for Seattle, but he could be eased into such spots. Santos will be making his Mariners debut when he gets into a game after being acquired via trade from the White Sox over the offseason.

Solid in second rehab outing Santos (lat) fired a scoreless fourth inning for High-A Everett against Vancouver on Saturday, recording a strikeout.
Impact Santos needed just eight pitches to get through his one frame Saturday, following a 13-pitch rehab debut with Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. The right-hander may have already done enough to warrant his activation, however, as MLB.com reports Santos will be evaluated for a possible return during Monday's team off day ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Padres.

Scoreless frame in rehab debut Santos (lat) fired a scoreless inning in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Salt Lake on Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout.
Impact Santos' long-awaited return to game action consisted of 13 pitches, nine which he located for strikes. Per reports from Triple-A Tacoma play-by-play announcer Mike Curto relayed by MLB.com, Santos' fastball was regularly at 97-99 mph during the outing, while the slider checked in the 87-90 mph range. Santos is slated to make at least a couple of more rehab appearances before activation is considered, and he's expected to be handled with caution once he does return to the big-league roster. "We're going to have to be very guarded on how we use him and kind of build him up," manager Scott Servais said. "It'll be an inning at a time here or there. There will be some days off in between."

Another live BP set Santos (lat) is set to throw another live batting practice Friday in Seattle and could begin a rehab assignment shortly thereafter, MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander put together a very encouraging live BP on Saturday in Miami before that day's game against the Marlins, using his sinker/slider combo with great effectiveness and impressive velocity against Ryan Bliss and Tyler Locklear in a 10-pitch session. If Santos encounters similar success Friday, it appears he'll be ticketed for what should be a fairly lengthy rehab assignment, given he's been sidelined since spring training.

Ups throwing distance Santos (lat) recently upped his throwing distance to 120 feet, MLB.com reports.
Impact A recent shift to the 60-day IL didn't impact Santos' return timeline, as he was never expected to be able to return before late May. That appears to still remain realistic, and he's slated to continue throwing at the 120-foot distance throughout this week before upping his intensity again.

Slated for MRI Santos (lat) will receive an MRI in the coming days, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Santos strained his right lat during a bullpen session earlier in spring camp, and his MRI will determine if the inflammation has gone down enough for him to resume his throwing program. Santos will begin the year on the injured list, but his absence isn't expected to extend more than a couple months into the regular season.

Not yet in rehab routine Santos, who suffered a mild lat strain Monday, is still "waiting to get things calmed down" before officially beginning a rehab routine, MLB.com reports.
Impact The update comes directly from manager Scott Servais, who's counting on Santos to play a key seventh- and eighth-inning role this season. Santos has already been ruled out for Opening Day, however, and it's likely extra caution is taken as the restart date of his baseball activities considering he's also already dealt with a shoulder problem this spring.

Gregory Santos back on mound for the Mariners. Their new reliever may not be ready for season opener

Could throw off mound soon Santos (lat) will long-toss from 150 feet Tuesday and might be cleared to throw off a mound in a few days, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Santos developed right lat soreness early on in camp and resumed throwing a week ago. The reliever should have time to ramp up for Opening Day if he can avoid setbacks, but it's going to be close.
MARCH 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Resuming throwing program Tuesday Santos (lat) will resume a throwing program Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Santos has been slowed this spring by some soreness in his right lat which cropped up during an early bullpen session. He's made the necessary progress to be cleared to throw again and will presumably start with some flat-ground work before progressing to the mound and facing hitters. Santos has time to be ready for Opening Day but can't afford a setback.

Elbow inflammation ends season Santos was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right elbow inflammation.
Impact Given that he last pitched Sept. 16, Santos will be ineligible to return this season. He was given an opportunity to run with the closer's role after the trade deadline, but Santos logged a 6.00 ERA and 1.47 WHIP while going 3-for-6 in save situations over the past six weeks. Bryan Shaw, who blew a save Tuesday, and Aaron Bummer are presumably next up for save chances the rest of the way.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Balks in game-winning run Santos (2-2) blew the save and took the loss Tuesday against the Royals. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Santos was unable to convert on Tuesday's save opportunity, marking his third straight blown save. While only one of the two ninth-inning runs was earned, Santos still allowed three baserunners and committed a balk with the bases loaded to give Kansas City the win. Over his last six appearances (5.1 frames), Santos owns a 10.13 ERA and a 6:3 K:BB.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Another poor outing Santos allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two across 1.1 innings to blow a save chance Wednesday against the Mariners.
Impact Santos entered the game in the eighth inning and was in line to attempt a five-out save. However, he unraveled after striking out the leadoff man in the final frame, allowing five consecutive batters to reach base while blowing a two-run advantage. Santos has now blown each of his last two save chances while allowing six earned runs across a combined 2.2 innings. The White Sox lack high-quality relievers in the back of their bullpen, but if he continues to struggle it's possible that Jimmy Lambert or Aaron Bummer could see save chances across the final month of the campaign.
