The Colorado Rockies agreed to a two-year contract extension with veteran right-hander German Marquez.

Inks two-year extension
Colorado signed Marquez to a two-year contract extension on Friday.
Impact
This new deal will cover the 2024-2025 seasons, so Marquez is no longer an impending free agent and now carries some financial security into the remaining several months of his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. He underwent the reconstructive elbow procedure in May of this year and is not expected to return to a major-league mound until the second half of the 2024 campaign. The 28-year-old right-hander owns a 4.41 ERA in 1,016 career big-league innings, all with the Rockies. His career ERA away from Coors Field is 3.80.

Moved to 60-day IL
The Rockies placed Marquez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Friday.
Impact
Marquez underwent Tommy John surgery last week, so a trip to the 60-day IL was inevitable. He will be shut down for the rest of the season and likely won't return until the back half of the 2024 campaign.

Impact
Marquez underwent the procedure in the Denver area. The right-hander will miss the rest of the 2023 season and likely won't be ready to pitch until the middle of the summer in 2024 while he recovers.

To have Tommy John surgery
Marquez (elbow) revealed Tuesday that he needs Tommy John surgery, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports.
Impact
Marquez expressed concern that he might require the reconstructive elbow surgery when he was placed on the injured list last Friday, and now his fears have been realized. There's no set date yet for the procedure, but it's going to knock him out until at least the midway point of the 2024 season. Colorado will almost certainly decline his $16 million club option in November, making him a free agent with several more months of rehab ahead. It's a brutal blow for the 28-year-old right-hander and for the Rockies, who might have looked to finally trade him this summer.

Might need Tommy John surgery
Marquez (elbow) said Friday that he's worried he might require Tommy John surgery, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports.
Impact
Marquez was placed on the injured list Friday afternoon with an initial diagnosis of right elbow inflammation, but he'll get another MRI and a second opinion from a specialist Monday. Either way, it's clear now that the 28-year-old right-hander is going to be absent from the Rockies' rotation for much longer than 15 days. Tommy John surgery would knock him out until late 2024. Marquez is in the final guaranteed year of the five-year, $43 million extension he signed with Colorado back in April 2019.

Placed on IL with sore elbow
Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to April 27, with right elbow inflammation.
Impact
Marquez was pulled from his last turn in the Rockies' rotation Wednesday versus the Guardians after experiencing upper-arm discomfort. An MRI taken Thursday showed no structural damage, but the 28-year-old right-hander will need some time off as the elbow inflammation dissipates. Connor Seabold is up from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move and could be a fill-in option for Marquez.

Impact
Making his return Wednesday from a minimum-length stay on the injured list due to right forearm inflammation, Marquez (2-2) took the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings. Though he was laboring through the start, Marquez was expected to work deeper into the outing before he felt a "sharp pain" in his arm following his 58th and final pitch of the afternoon. While initial tests on Marquez's arm didn't show any significant damage nor an aggravation of the prior injury, the Rockies won't know the full extent of the issue until after the MRI is conducted.

Exits with injury
Marquez exited Wednesday's start in Cleveland with an apparent arm injury, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Impact
Marquez recorded 11 outs, struck out four and allowed three runs before signaling to the dugout and exiting. The veteran just returned from a right forearm strain and could be facing another absence, depending on the severity of this injury. More details about Marquez should become available within the next couple days.

ROTOWIRE
Reinstated from IL
Marquez (forearm) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will start Wednesday against the Guardians.
Impact
Marquez will make his return to the mound after spending the minimum 15 days on the injured list after straining his right forearm. Considering the fact that he didn't make any rehab starts and instead is stepping right back into big-league competition, it's likely that he won't have a complete workload Wednesday. To make room for Marquez on the major-league roster, Jose Urena was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

ROTOWIRE
Set to start Wednesday
The Rockies are expected to activate Marquez (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to have him start Wednesday's series finale in Cleveland, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Marquez reportedly responded well to throwing a bullpen session Sunday, his second since landing on the injured list April 12. Rather than having Marquez waste his bullets during a simulated game or minor-league rehab start, the right-hander will slot right back into the big-league rotation when he's first eligible to return from the IL. He could be in store for a lighter workload than usual, however.

Could return from IL this weekend

Impact
Marquez is eligible to return from the IL as soon as Wednesday's series finale in Cleveland, but Noah Davis is already listed as the team's confirmed starter for that day. As such, a return for this weekend's series versus the Diamondbacks at Coors Field seems more realistic for Marquez, provided the Rockies don't feel that he needs to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand. Whenever Marquez is activated, Austin Gomber (0-4, 12.12 ERA, 2.14 WHIP in four starts) would seem to be most at risk of losing his rotation spot.

Bullpen session coming Thursday
Marquez (forearm) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
Impact
Before he's formally cleared to resume mound work, Marquez will play catch off flat ground from 90 feet Monday. The Rockies have optimism that the right forearm strain Marquez sustained in an April 10 start won't require anything more than a 15-day stint on the injured list, but he still has a few hurdles to clear in the recovery process to make that a reality.

Minimum IL stay expected
Marquez (forearm) is expected to need only a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The forearm injury which sent Marquez to the IL is muscle-related, so he just needs a few days of rest for it to calm down. It's unclear whether Marquez will make a rehab start before returning, but it sounds like he'll be back with the big club before the end of the month.

Lands on 15-day injured list
Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Rockies on Wednesday with a right forearm strain, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports.
Impact
Marquez had to exit Monday's outing with the injury. The good news is he doesn't have any structural damage and could have a shot to return when first eligible or close to it. Noah Davis seems to be the most likely candidate to take Marquez's spot in the Rockies' rotation.
