Named Opening Day starter
Manager Bud Black named Marquez the starter for Opening Day against the Dodgers on Thursday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
Impact
It's not much of a surprise the 26-year-old will start Opening Day for Colorado, but it's now been confirmed by the team. Marquez started 13 games for the Rockies in 2020 and posted a 3.75 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB across 81.2 innings.

Allows three runs once again
Marquez allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings during Monday's spring win over the Rangers. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact
Marquez had a strong spring debut this year but has given up at least three runs in each of his last three outings. The right-hander has had issues with command during his Cactus League starts but still projects as the team's Opening Day starter in 2021. "This spring training is kind of weird with my delivery, so I'm trying to find that point," Marquez told Thomas Harding of MLB.com. "I think I'm getting closer." Marquez should have one more spring tune-up prior to the regular season.

Gives up three runs in spring start
Marquez allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out six over five innings in Wednesday's spring loss to the Giants. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact
Marquez allowed two runs to cross the plate in the top of the first inning Wednesday, but he settled down over the rest of his outing and gave up just one more run in the fourth frame. The right-hander has allowed seven runs (six earned) on 15 hits and four walks while striking out 10 over 11 innings during his first three starts of spring training. Despite his recent struggles, Marquez is a strong candidate to serve as the Opening Day starter for the Rockies.

Impact
Marquez was expected to throw four innings against San Francisco, but he struggled to get loose Friday during a somewhat chilly day in Arizona. He struggled to limit production after tossing three scoreless frames in his spring debut. The right-hander had issues with his fastball location during the rough start, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. "I don't mind the weather because the beginning of the season is going to be cold in Denver," Marquez told Harding. "I didn't feel really loose. Whether it was the weather, I don't know. I have to make an adjustment. It didn't work out." Marquez should serve as the Opening Day starter for Colorado and will have just under three weeks to turn things around before the start of the regular season.

Fires three scoreless frames
Marquez allowed three hits and one walk while striking out one over three scoreless innings in Sunday's spring win over the White Sox. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact
Marquez made his spring debut against Chicago on Sunday and allowed baserunners in each of his three innings, but he didn't encounter many issues during his scoreless outing. The right-hander wants to focus on making his pitches from the stretch going forward this spring, but he had a strong start to Cactus League play Sunday. Assuming he continues to pitch well in spring training, Marquez will likely serve as the Opening Day starter for the Rockies.

Earns win over Diamondbacks
Marquez (4-6) earned the win Saturday against Arizona after allowing three runs (none earned) on five hits and one walk while fanning seven across seven innings.
Impact
Marquez ended the season on a strong note, allowing two or fewer earned runs in four of five September starts while notching a quality start in each one of those contests. The 25-year-old right-hander ended the campaign with a career-best 3.75 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in 81.2 innings across 13 starts. He has posted a WHIP under the 1.30 mark in three straight seasons.

Delivers six solid innings
Marquez (3-6) allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings in a win over the Giants on Monday.
Impact
The only run against Marquez came in the fifth inning on a Donovan Solano single. Other than that, the right-hander was able to produce his fourth straight quality start. Marquez has a 4.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 66:24 K:BB in 74.2 innings this year. He's expected to make his last start of the regular season Saturday in Arizona.

Takes loss in quality start
Marquez (2-6) took the loss Wednesday against the A's after giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks over 6.2 innings.
Impact
The 25-year-old certainly wasn't at his best Wednesday as he set a season high with four walks, but he battled and kept Colorado in the game despite minimal offense. Marquez has a 4.33 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 63:23 K:BB across 68.2 innings and lines up to pitch Monday at San Francisco.

Initial reports stated that the Rockies planned to take advantage of Monday's day off to push Marquez up in the rotation, but he'll remain in his original spot Wednesday. The right-hander has settled for no-decisions in his past two starts as he allowed two runs over seven innings in each of those outings.

Strong in no-decision
Marquez allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings Friday versus the Angels. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision.
Impact
Marquez had allowed 15 runs over 11 innings in his last two home starts, but he was significantly better Friday. He exited the game with a lead, but Mychal Givens allowed a game-tying solo shot to Jared Walsh in the eighth, denying Marquez the win. The 25-year-old right-hander has a 4.35 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 57 strikeouts across 62 innings this season. Marquez hasn't notched a win in his last seven outings, a trend he'll try to change at home Wednesday versus the Athletics.
