Impact Whitlock's scheduled start for Saturday against the Mariners was up in the air, and he'll ultimately require an IL stint after being diagnosed with hip inflammation. Right-hander Phillips Valdez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take his place on the active roster, but it's not yet clear who will take Whitlock's place in the rotation. Although manager Alex Cora recently downplayed the severity of Whitlock's injury, a timetable for his return hasn't yet been revealed.

The manager indicated the condition is "nothing serious," while the pitcher said it's not bothering him when he pitches. "But obviously we have to take care of him," Cora said. "Maybe we can make adjustments as far as like his conditioning and all that. Instead of running outside, let's do it on the treadmill." Cora added that Whitlock will be ready for his next start, which is slated for Sunday in Seattle.

Impact Whitlock had some trouble with Mike Trout in particular, as the Angels' star outfielder hit a two-run home run and a double before exiting the game with groin tightness. Whitlock didn't do that well to settle in, and he was done after 71 pitches (47 strikes) in a shaky outing. The right-hander now has a 3.51 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 49:11 K:BB across 48.2 innings in 13 appearances (nine starts). He remains on a 2-1 record heading into his next start this weekend in Seattle.
