Impact The right-hander pitched through a fractured right tibia down the stretch, but he still pitched well as he didn't give up an earned run in his final nine outings of the regular season. It's no surprise that Boston picked up the option after he posted a 1.72 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 59:9 K:BB while recording four saves and 27 holds in 54 regular-season appearances.

Impact Whitlock pitched through leg pain during the final month of the regular season, and only after imaging following the wild-card series did he discover he'd suffered a fracture. He'll spend roughly six weeks in a walking boot but should avoid surgery, and he's expected to be fully healthy by the time spring training begins.

He got the save chance after the Red Sox took the lead in the eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman was deemed unavailable to due a lat issue, which the Red Sox are approaching with caution. Whitlock has thrived as a reliever this year with a 1.78 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 58:8 K:BB while adding four saves, 25 holds and four blown saves over 50.2 innings. He should be in line for more save chances if they arise before Chapman is cleared to return to the mound.
