Sent to IL with elbow inflammation The Red Sox placed Whitlock on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Impact Manager Chad Tracy revealed that Whitlock was unavailable to pitch in Wednesday's loss to the Blue Jays because of a sore elbow, and the club has opted to put the reliever on the IL. Whitlock noted Wednesday that he has a "very low" level of concern that the injury is serious, but the Red Sox could send him for imaging just in case.

Impact After Aroldis Chapman held New York scoreless in the bottom of the ninth inning, Whitlock got the call in the 10th after the Red Sox took a run-one lead in the top half. He'd set the Mets down on 15 pitches, stranding the free runner at second base to notch his second save this season. Whitlock has been excellent in the backend of Boston's bullpen of late. He's allowed just one run in his last 14 appearances (13.1 innings), posting a 0.68 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and no walks over that span. Whitlock will head into the All-Star break with a 2.18 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 37:6 K:BB across 33 innings this year.

Impact With Aroldis Chapman presumably unavailable after pitching in each of the previous two days, Whitlock was called upon in the ninth inning and got the job done to secure his first save of the season. Since returning June 9 from a stint on the injured list due to left knee inflammation, the right-hander has allowed one run across eight innings with a 7:0 K:BB. Overall, Whitlock owns a 2.60 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 32:6 K:BB across 27.2 innings while serving as one of Boston's highest-leverage relievers, though he isn't likely to see regular save opportunities while Chapman is in the picture.
