Reds see bright spots in 2021 despite late-season fade
The Cincinnati Reds fell apart down the stretch and fell out of playoff contention but there were more than a few positive developments this season

Homers yet again
Suarez went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Saturday's 8-6 loss to the Pirates.
Impact
Suarez continued his hot September with yet another home run. This one was of the two-run variety off Max Kranick, and Suarez followed it up with a double to make it a multi-hit night. With one game to go, the third baseman is now hitting .371 in MLB's final month with eight home runs. If he could ever reduce the swing-and-miss in his game, the 30-year-old has the pop to be one of the better sluggers in the game. Alas, even with his late season surge he's hitting just .197 on the year with 171 strikeouts.

Provides team's only run
Suarez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the White Sox.
Impact
Suarez connected on a fastball low in the zone and sent it over the wall in left field in the fifth to provide the Reds with their only run of the night. The 29-year-old now has at least a hit in eight straight games and is slashing .438/.486/.938 with four homers, seven RBI, six runs scored and 3:9 BB:K. However, don't let his recent success distract from the fact that he's likely on pace for his worst averages at the plate in his eight-year career. Suarez is slashing .193/.280/.420 with 30 home runs, 77 RBI, 69 runs scored and 54:168 BB:K over 557 plate appearances. He has elite power, as he's shown over most of his career, but offsets it with an undisciplined approach at the plate that has lead to a batting average hovering around .200 over the last two years.

Extends hitting streak
Suarez went 1-for-5 with a double and three strikeouts in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Nationals.
Impact
Suarez's two-bagger allowed him to extend his hitting streak to six games, tying his longest stretch of the season. With Mike Moustakas (foot) on the injured list, Suarez is poised to play regularly at third base during the final week of the season, perhaps making him an attractive pickup in leagues where fantasy managers may have dropped him during what's been a rough campaign for the 30-year-old. Suarez owns a meager .678 OPs on the season, but he's slashing .400/.444/.760 with five extra-base knocks during his ongoing hitting streak.

Usurps Moustakas on depth chart
Suarez will start at third base and bat sixth Wednesday against the Pirates.
Impact
Suarez was moved into a short-side platoon role in mid-August, but the 30-year-old seems to have wrested primary duties at third base back from Mike Moustakas, who has struggled mightily at the dish since returning from the injured list. The lefty-hitting Moustakas will be on the bench for the fourth game in a row, with the last two benchings coming against right-handed starting pitchers. Meanwhile, after churning out consecutive two-hit games to begin the week, the righty-hitting Suarez looks like he'll see regular work against both righties and lefties for the foreseeable future.

Goes deep in victory
Suarez went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's win over the Pirates.
Impact
The third baseman took reliever Cody Ponce deep in the fifth inning, giving the Reds the lead. The homer marked his 27th of the year. In his last 9 games in the starting lineup, he has collected multiple hits four times. Since the beginning of the month, the 30-year-old has launched four home runs and raised his season batting average from .169 to .179.

Goes deep in win
Suarez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a 4-2 victory versus the Cardinals on Friday.
Impact
The veteran's 452-foot blast in the second inning staked Cincinnati to an early lead. It was Suarez's 26th long ball of the season, marking the fourth time in the past five campaigns that he has reached that mark (the lone exception was last year's COVID-shortened slate). While the power has been there for Suarez this season, he has struggled overall with a .177 batting average and career-worst 30.3 percent strikeout rate.

Slugs homer No. 25
Suarez went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 15-5 loss to the Tigers.
Impact
He got the Reds on the board with a blast off Tyler Alexander in the second inning, but Cincinnati was already in a 2-0 hole at that point. Suarez has gone yard in back-to-back games to give him 25 homers on the year, the fourth consecutive full season in which he's reached that mark, but he continues to struggle making consistent contact -- since the beginning of August, he's slashing .188/.284/.484 through 22 games.

Connects for 24th homer
Suarez went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and a second run scored in a 12-2 rout of the Cardinals during the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Impact
The 30-year-old wasn't in the starting lineup for the matinee of the twin bill, but he did collect a pinch-hit single before flexing his muscles in the nightcap. Suarez hadn't had a multi-hit performance since July 20, and on the year he's batting a woeful .174 with 24 homers, 58 runs and 67 RBI through 122 games.

Back on bench
Suarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.
Impact
Suarez will take a seat after he went a collective 3-for-25 with a home run and three walks while starting each of the past seven games, resulting in his season-long batting average plummeting to .173. He benefited largely from the Reds' encountering a heavy stretch of left-handed pitching, but the struggling Suarez doesn't look as though he'll receive regular opportunities versus right-handed pitching following Mike Moustakas' recent return from the 60-day injured list.

Pops homer in win
Suarez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 6-1 win over Philadelphia.
Impact
Suarez got into the lineup at shortstop against right-hander Zack Wheeler as Kyle Farmer received a day off. For the third straight game, Suarez posted an extra-base hit (one homer, two doubles). The infielder has a poor .175/.259/.379 slash line, but he's generated solid counting stats with 23 long balls, 65 RBI and 53 runs scored through 463 plate appearances. Expect Suarez to drop back into a short-side platoon role with Mike Moustakas at third base most often.

ROTOWIRE
Stuck on short side of platoon
Suarez will occupy the short side of a platoon with Mike Moustakas at third base for now, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact
The Reds' default lineup early in the season featured Moustakas at third base and Suarez at shortstop, but Suarez fared poorly enough at that position that the team evidently no longer views him as a viable option there now that Moustakas is back from an extended absence due to a heel contusion. Considering that Suarez has slumped to a 70 wRC+ this season and had a barely above-average 104 wRC+ last year, it's no surprise that the Reds don't feel the need to keep him in an everyday role. He bats right-handed while Moustakas hits left-handed, so a platoon looks like a natural setup that the Reds could stick to down the stretch.

ROTOWIRE
Pushed to bench
Suarez is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.
Impact
Mike Moustakas (heel) returns from a lengthy absence and will start at third base in Suarez's place. Early in the season, the Reds regularly started Suarez at shortstop and Moustakas at third, but Suarez looked overmatched at the position and hasn't started there since May 29th. Whether or not that alignment will be an option now that Moustakas is back is not yet clear. If it's not, Suarez could see his playing time substantially reduced. That's arguably something that should be happening already given that he owns a .177/.260/.379 slash line on the season, though he does have a much better .800 OPS over his last 15 games.

Blasts 22nd home run
Suarez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Pirates.
Impact
Suarez slammed a three-run homer in the second inning off Wil Crowe, extending the early lead to four runs. His 22 homers are tied with Joey Votto for most on the Reds. The 29-year-old has a hit in each of his last six games, with three long balls in that span. On the season, he is slashing a poor .177/.260/.379 in 438 plate appearances. This is the first time in his career he has consistently hit below the Mendoza Line.
