Red Sox will begin season without extensions for Rafael Devers, Alex Verdugo, and Eduardo Rodriguez - The Boston Globe
The trend in baseball this spring has been away from long-term extensions, likely because of market uncertainty over a new CBA.

Likely headed to IL
Manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Rodriguez (arm) has a "pretty good chance" of opening the season on the 10-day injured list, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
Boston had previously pushed Rodriguez off the Opening Day start after he experienced a case of dead arm late in camp, and though the lefty has since thrown a pair of bullpen sessions over the past three days, he doesn't look as though he'll be ready to go by the time the team first requires a fifth starter in next week's series with the Rays. Rodriguez doesn't seem to have experienced any setbacks in his recovery, but the Red Sox want him to face hitters in live batting practice or a simulated game before clearing him for his season debut. Even if he lands on the IL, Rodriguez shouldn't be sidelined for much longer than the 10-day minimum.

Throws another bullpen session
Rodriguez (arm) threw another bullpen session Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact
Rodriguez was initially expected to start on Opening Day but was pushed back due to a dead arm. It's not particularly surprising that he'd be dealing with such an issue, as he missed all of last season after developing a heart condition during his battle with COVID-19. While the heart problem is no longer an issue, the Red Sox may have to handle him carefully for most of the season. It's not yet clear when he's expected to make his season debut.

Throws successful bullpen
Rodriguez (arm) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Impact
Rodriguez was pushed back from starting Opening Day after he experienced a dead arm period, but manager Alex Cora was impressed with the left-hander's performance during his throwing session Saturday. Rodriguez threw all of his pitches and had good control, and the team will see how he reacts Sunday. A better timetable for his return could be revealed once the Red Sox complete their evaluation.

Throwing bullpen session Saturday
Rodriguez (arm) is scheduled for a bullpen session Saturday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Impact
The Red Sox announced Friday that the left-hander was pushed back from starting Opening Day after experiencing a dead arm period, band Saturday's bullpen session should provide a better idea for his early-season outlook. Rodriguez is without a timeline for his return, but a strong bullpen session could allow him to avoid the injured list to begin the season.

Pushed back from Opening Day
Rodriguez won't start Opening Day against Baltimore as previously scheduled after experiencing a "dead arm" period, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
The 27-year-old battled his command during his last spring start Monday, and his struggles apparently stemmed from the dead arm issue. Rodriguez skipped his most recent bullpen session to get extra rest but may be able to retake the mound within the next couple days. The left-hander could slot into the back end of the rotation without actually missing a turn to open the season. Nathan Eovaldi will instead start Opening Day for Boston.

Fights command in short outing
Rodriguez allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings in Monday's spring game against Tampa Bay.
Impact
Rodriguez battled command issues and needed 45 pitches to get his six outs. It was surprising that the outing was cut short after the left-hander threw five innings in his previous start, but manager Alex Cora didn't want to belabor things for his ace, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Instead of going deeper into the game, Rodriguez finished his work in the bullpen.

Throws five innings Wednesday
Rodriguez allowed one run on two hits and struck out six over five innings in Wednesday's spring game against the Twins.
Impact
Rodriguez, who was named Boston's Opening Day starter earlier in the day, dominated Minnesota, needing just 51 pitches to get 15 outs. In three Grapefruit League starts, the left-handed Rodriguez has a 2.31 ERA with 14 strikeouts and no walks over 11.2 innings.

Receives Opening Day nod
Manager Alex Cora said Rodriguez will receive the start for the Red Sox's April 1 season opener versus the Orioles, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
Based on how Boston's pitching schedule had lined up this spring, Rodriguez had already appeared to be trending toward the Opening Day nod, but it wasn't until after the lefty's third Grapefruit League outing Wednesday that he was locked in for the Red Sox's first game of the season. He was sensational in his latest turn on the mound, limiting the Twins to one run on two hits and no walks while striking out six over five innings. Rodriguez delivered similarly excellent results in his first two starts of the spring, and at this point, he looks to be back in top form after he was sidelined for the 2020 season when he was diagnosed with a heart condition following his positive COVID-19 test over the summer. He returned as a full participant for the start of camp and has thus far avoided any reported setbacks or complications.

Makes spring debut
Rodriguez allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over 2.2 innings in Friday's spring game against the Rays.
Impact
This was a big start for Rodriguez, who hadn't gone through a pre-game routine in nearly a year. He missed the shortened 2020 season with myocarditis that developed following a severe case of COVID-19. Other than a second-inning home run to Moises Gomez, the left-hander had little trouble navigating Tampa Bay's roster. He was planned to pitch three innings or 50 pitches and was pulled by manager Alex Cora as Rodriguez neared his pitch limit, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Rodriguez, who threw a two-inning simulated game last Sunday, became the first Boston starter to make a progression by pitching into a third inning. He was pleased with his cutter and breaking ball.
