Jameson, D-backs 'ready to compete' after big homestand
PHOENIX -- Drey Jameson’s return to the rotation went as well as he or the D-backs could have hoped as he tossed four scoreless innings in A...

Stellar in spot start
Jameson did not factor into the decision Wednesday, tossing four scoreless innings on three hits and zero walks during a 7-3 win over Milwaukee. He struck out four.
Impact
Jameson was filling in for Zach Davies, who was recently placed on the 15-day injured list, and despite looking sharp through four innings, he was pulled after just 54 pitches. The second-year right-hander would be an intriguing streaming option while Davies is out, but given his current limitations, he doesn't have enough upside to warrant a roster move in standard leagues. He's tentatively scheduled to pitch again versus St. Louis next week.

Starting Wednesday vs. Brewers
Jameson will start Wednesday against the Brewers, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
Impact
Jameson is moving into the rotation to replace Zach Davies after Davies was placed on the 15-day injured list with his oblique strain. The right-hander has registered a 2.16 ERA and whiffed eight hitters in his 8.1 innings of work. There are some talented arms in the Arizona system who could replace Jameson if he struggles early -- namely top prospect Brandon Pfaadt -- but it seems likely that he'll be given a few turns in the rotation to begin the year.

Moving into rotation
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced Sunday that Jameson is moving into the starting rotation while Zach Davies (oblique) is on the injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona...
Impact
Jameson has been effective out of the bullpen for the Diamondbacks thus far with a 2.16 ERA and 8:5 K:BB over 8.1 innings in three appearances. The right-hander has worked at least two innings in each of his outings -- four against the Dodgers on March 31 -- and he should be stretched out after competing for the fifth starter spot in the Cactus League. If Jameson pitches well over his first few outings he has a good chance to stay in the rotation even after Davies is ready to return.

Thriving in bullpen
Jameson (2-0) allowed one walk while striking out one over 2.1 scoreless relief innings to pick up the win in Friday's 6-3 victory over the Dodgers.
Impact
Jameson, who lost out on the fifth starter job in spring training, has thrived as a reliever. In three appearances, the right-hander has earned two wins and save while never pitching fewer than two innings. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo appears to have made a shrewd decision in moving him to the 'pen in a multi-inning role instead of having him start in the minors. The dark lining to this silver cloud are the two home runs and five walks allowed along with a .158 BABIP, which project a 6.23 FIP. Fortunately for Jameson, both homers were solo shots and the free passes have not hurt.

Earns two-inning save
Jameson picked up the save Tuesday against San Diego. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings.
Impact
He lost the battle for the final rotation spot to Ryne Nelson, but Jameson is having a great opening week regardless as he grabbed his first win of 2023 on Friday and now has his first career save to go with it. The back end of the Arizona bullpen has been shaky early on and Jameson, a top 10 prospect in the organization, could quickly emerge as a go-to option in high leverage. He could also stretch back out into a starter's role at some point.

Notches win in relief
Jameson (1-0) picked up the win in Friday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over four innings of relief. He struck out five.
Impact
Merrill Kelly got the start but lasted only 3.2 innings and 74 pitches, forcing the Diamondbacks to turn to their bullpen early. Jameson stepped up with an impressive performance in long relief, firing 38 of his 66 pitches for strikes with 13 swinging strikes. The 25-year-old will continue in his bullpen role for now, but if a spot opens up in the rotation, expect him to get first crack at filling it.

Opening season in bullpen
Jameson will begin the 2023 campaign working out of the bullpen after Ryne Nelson was named Arizona's No. 5 starter Sunday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Neither pitcher performed particularly well during spring training with ERAs above 7.00, but it'll be Nelson that receives the first crack at the rotation in 2023. Jameson was lights out in his first taste of the majors last year with a 1.48 ERA and 24:7 K:BB across 24.1 innings (four starts).

Fans seven Thursday
Jameson allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven over 4.1 innings in Thursday's split-squad start against the Dodgers.
Impact
Jameson gave up three runs in the first inning, then got a ton of run support -- 10, in fact -- during the bottom half of the inning. He settled in after that, although he dealt with base runners in four of the five innings he worked. Jameson's competition for the No. 5 starter job, Ryne Nelson, pitched in the other split-squad game and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. Neither pitcher has a statistical advantage in the job battle, which looks like it will go down to the wire.

Rainouts force schedule change
Jameson threw in a minor-league game Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Jameson was one of several pitchers affected by the two-game rainout Wednesday and was adjusted to throw Friday. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Jameson showed excellent velocity on his fastball, which touched triple digits. The manager also said nothing should be read into the fact that he didn't pitch in a Cactus League game. Jameson is one of four starters still competing for the final spot in the rotation.

Works three-plus innings
Jameson allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four over three-plus innings in Sunday's spring start against the Rockies.
Impact
Jameson allowed a pair of home runs in his fourth Cactus League start. The right-hander got off to a good start this spring in his quest to claim the No. 5 starter job, but has been knocked around his last two times out. Jameson allowed eight runs and 11 hits over the last 5.2 innings. His main competition for the job, Ryne Nelson, appeared as a reliever Sunday and faired better (one run, four hits, 2.2 IP).

Impact
Jameson was worked by the Royals in the first couple of innings Monday, before manager Torey Lovullo removed him from the game with two outs in second frame. The manager brought Jameson back in for the third inning, and the right-hander was dialed in with the help of his changeup. The manager believes he was sharp but made mistakes on 0-2 pitches that hurt. Jameson pitched well in his first two Cactus League starts and is considered the frontrunner for the final rotation spot.

Cuffed around by Royals
Jameson allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five over 2.2 innings in Monday's spring start against the Royals.
Impact
Jameson gave up a first-inning home run then allowed several base runners in the second before being pulled. He came back out for the third inning to face one more batter in what was his first clunker in three Cactus League starts. Of the group battling for the final rotation spot, Jameson has been the best among Tommy Henry and Ryne Nelson.

Logs two scoreless innings
Jameson allowed a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings in Saturday's spring game against Oakland.
Impact
Jameson and Ryne Nelson, the two leading candidates for Arizona's fifth-starter job, started split-squad contests Saturday. After round one, Jameson has the edge, as Nelson was knocked around by the Rockies for four runs in one-plus innings.

Starting in split squad matchup
Jameson will start on the mound for Arizona in Saturday's split-squad game against Oakland, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Jameson turned a few heads in his brief major-league stint last season, posting a 1.48 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through 24.1 frames in four starts. He's one of the primary candidates for the fifth spot in Arizona's rotation alongside Ryne Nelson, who will start in the D-backs' other split-squad matchup Saturday against Colorado.

Will battle for rotation
Jameson is expected to compete for the No. 5 starter job this spring, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Impact
Jameson started 2022 at Double-A Amarillo before moving onto Triple-A Reno and was effective in a four-start stint with the Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old right-hander pitched to 1.48 ERA over 24.1 innings and threw at least six innings in three of his four starts. He and Ryne Nelson are considered the top candidates for the rotation, ahead of Tommy Henry and Brandon Pfaadt.

Records third win
Jameson (3-0) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against the Giants. He struck out seven.
Impact
Jameson's biggest mistake came on a solo home run from third baseman J.D. Davis with two outs in the sixth inning to cut Arizona's lead to 3-2. This was just the fourth major-league start of the 25-year-old's career, and he has allowed two runs or fewer in all four with three of them being quality starts.

Tosses 5.1 scoreless innings
Jameson did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing no runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings against the Giants. He struck out five.
Impact
Jameson continued his strong start to his big-league career, as he did not allow a run for the second time in three starts. The rookie showed poise on the mound as the scoreless outing came despite being forced into the stretch in each of the six innings he appeared in. Jameson was hit hard in Triple-A to the tune of a 6.95 ERA through 114 innings this season, so he will be worth keeping an eye on to see if his breakout is for real.

Impact
After tossing seven shutout innings in his big-league debut last Thursday, Jameson delivered another quality start for Arizona in his encore. The 25-year-old righty tossed 62 of 94 pitches for strikes and extended his career-opening scoreless streak to 12.1 frames before Max Muncy touched him up for a two-run blast. Jameson had some issues keeping the ball in the park in the minors, but with two impressive outings out of the gate, he seems to be locking down a spot in the D-backs' Opening Day rotation in 2023.

Receives another start
Jameson is scheduled to start Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader with the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
Impact
The rookie right-hander is unsurprisingly getting a second turn through the rotation after he struck out five while holding the Padres scoreless over seven frames in his MLB debut last week. Prior to his call-up from Triple-A Reno, Jameson posted unremarkable numbers (6.95 ERA, 1.59 WHIP) over a larger sample of innings (114) in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, so he won't make for the most comfortable streaming option in a road start against one of baseball's top offenses.
