Impact Hurter had been making regular turns through the Detroit rotation since his Aug. 4 call-up from Triple-A Toledo, but Hinch had deployed the left-hander as a bulk reliever behind an opener on each of his first four big-league appearances. The 25-year-old rookie has fared well in that capacity, ringing up a 3.57 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB, and the Tigers now appear motivated to see if he can maintain that form while operating in a traditional starting role. A banged-up Tigers pitching staff will get some reinforcements in the rotation this week with the promotion of prospect Ty Madden from Triple-A and Casey Mize's (hamstring) expected return from the 60-day injured list, but Hurter should have a case for sticking around in a starting role the rest of the season if he continues to impress Tuesday.
