Needs MRI on oblique
Hernandez (oblique) will have an MRI on Tuesday or Wednesday, as the injury is more serious than originally thought, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Impact
The team initially thought Hernandez would be able to return soon from the injured list, but he is in more pain now, so they will run some tests. Pitchers can end up missing significant time with serious oblique strains, so he should be considered out indefinitely for now.

Lands on IL
Hernandez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a strained right oblique, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The lefty will miss an indefinite amount of time with the oblique injury, which he presumably suffered during Thursday's game against the Blue Jays. Four consecutive scoreless appearances have lowered Hernandez's ERA to 3.44 on the season, although his 1.50 WHIP remains unspectacular. Newly acquired relievers Hansel Robles and Austin Davis were activated to replace Hernandez and Connor Wong on the 26-man roster.

Fails to procure an out
Hernandez allowed four runs on two hits and two walks without retiring a batter in Sunday's 9-1 loss to the Yankees.
Impact
Hernandez made a bad night worse when he entered a 3-0 game in the seventh inning. A single, a two-run home run and two walks later, Hernandez was off the mound. Brandon Workman made the night even worse, walking three straight -- two with the bases loaded -- and the rout was on. Hernandez had been on a good roll prior to Sunday's contest; he had allowed just three runs over 18.1 innings to finish out the first half. There's still an issue with walks (7.5 BB/9 for the season), but he'd done a much better job in that regard since early June (3.8 BB/9 over 12 innings).

Earns win in extra innings
Hernandez (2-2) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, retiring all four batters he faced to win the game Tuesday over the Rays.
Impact
Hernandez failed to record a strikeout, but he still didn't allow a baserunner besides the runner that started on second. He finished out the 11th inning after the Red Sox put up four runs to get the victory. The 24-year-old has a 3.04 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with nine holds over 23.2 innings. He is great at preventing the long ball with just two home runs allowed this season and three over his 62.1-inning career. In addition, his career GB/FB stands out at 1.8.

Scoops up first win
Hernandez (1-2) allowed a run on one hit and struck out two in one inning to earn the win Thursday versus Houston.
Impact
Hernandez gave up a solo shot to Jose Altuve in the sixth inning, but Boston rallied for five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. That lead held up, and Hernandez picked up his first win in 24 appearances this year. The reliever has been far from dominant -- he has a 3.15 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 30:18 K:BB -- but he's allowed just two homers in 20 innings. The southpaw has added eight holds and a blown save.

Clutch in high-leverage outing
Hernandez struck out two and hit a batter over two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Phillies.
Impact
The talented yet inconsistent left-hander came on in a maximum-leverage spot and delivered two big strikeouts in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Hernandez fanned Bryce Harper on three consecutive pitches. After hitting Rhys Hoskins trimmed Boston's lead to one run, Hernandez went straight to work on Brad Miller. It looked like he struck out Miller on a 1-2 pitch that the umpire didn't view as a strike, but he locked in to deliver strike three two pitches later. Hernandez is knocked for nibbling and lacking command, but he was in pure attack mode Saturday.

Appears in low-leverage spot
Hernandez allowed two walks and struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning in Saturday's 9-0 win over the Angels.
Impact
Hernandez recently was removed from high-leverage work, so Saturday's low-leverage outing was a chance for the reliever to put together a successful appearance. He's allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks over his last 2.2 innings.

Lacks command in loss
Hernandez (0-2) was tagged with the loss Tuesday, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk over a third of an inning against Oakland.
Impact
Hernandez entered a 1-1 game after Nathan Eovaldi's six strong innings and walked the first batter faced. Two singles later, the Athletics plated a run, then he was charged with a second run with Adam Ottavino on the mound. Hernandez, who's had issues with command throughout his career, threw just seven strikes among his 16 pitches. Manager Alex Cora admitted he's still figuring out the late-inning rotation of relievers. "We're searching," Cora told Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com. "You've seen it. Obviously, we do feel very comfortable with some of the guys back there... But we need [others] to be more consistent. When that happens, the structure is gonna be a lot easier." During spring training, Hernandez was pegged as someone that could pitch the final third of games, but his 8.5 BB/9 and inconsistency is hard to trust.

Falters in high-leverage spot
Hernandez walked two over a third of an inning in Tuesday's 11-7 win over the Tigers.
Impact
A recent run of good pitching made manager Alex Cora feel comfortable putting Hernandez out there in the eighth inning to preserve a three-run lead. A fielding error put a man on base, then he walked two batters before departing with the bases loaded. Matt Barnes escaped the jam by inducing a double-play groundout, and Hernandez his fifth hold, albeit a shaky one. The left-hander has walked 10 batters in 10.1 innings, as the free pass continues to be a blocker to more high-leverage work.

Adjusts to poor effort
Hernandez allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless sixth inning in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Rangers.
Impact
Hernandez has bounced back after a disastrous outing April 22 against the Mariners, when he took the loss after allowing a three-run home run to Mitch Haniger. He's struck out eight without a walk over the three appearances since that game. The left-hander is mixing in more breaking balls, so that opponents can't sit on his heat, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Boston manager Alex Cora said he's learning where his fastball plays best and to attack those areas. That could earn him more work in high-leverage situations, the manager added.

Walks two in loss
Hernandez (0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out one in one inning to take the extra-inning loss to the Mariners.
Impact
Neither Hernandez nor Adam Ottavino before him did the Red Sox any favors by walking four batters late in the game. Seattle plated seven runs despite getting only three hits, the first time since 1994 a team has scored at least seven runs on three hits or fewer. Hernandez, who has been given a late-inning role, has issued eight free passes over seven innings.

Throws clean inning
Hernandez earned his third hold of the season, setting down the side in order in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Minnesota.
Impact
Hernandez entered for the sixth inning, which is like the eighth inning when playing a seven-inning, doubleheader game. It was his first clean inning of the season, and the left-hander hasn't allowed a run over the last five outings.

Fighting walks
Hernandez allowed two walks and struck out one over one scoreless inning in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-innings win over Tampa Bay.
Impact
Hernandez, who made his third appearance of the season, has walked four batters and struck out four over 2.1 innings. He's expected to be a late-inning reliever -- he entered Tuesday's contest in the eighth inning with Boston down 3-1 -- but has a history of command issues. The left-hander had a 7.7 BB/9 in 2019 and 8.6 in 2020.
