Hits first homer in win Wong went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
Impact Wong led off the fifth inning with a base hit, eventually coming around to score on Alex Verdugo's base hit to open the scoring. Wong would later extend Boston's lead to 4-1 with a two-run, 427-foot homer, his first of the season, in the sixth inning off Nick Sandlin. The 27-year-old Wong has gone 5-for-8 in his last two games against Cleveland. He's now slashing .241/.313/.362 with eight RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base through his first 65 plate appearances this season while splitting catching duties with Reese McGuire.

Impact Reese McGuire's inability to control the running game early on in the season has allowed Wong to emerge as Boston's No. 1 catcher, but the latter's job security may be starting to loosen. In his last start behind the dish in Monday's loss to the Angels, McGuire threw out the lone would-be base stealer on the day (Shohei Ohtani), and the backstop also went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run. McGuire enters Wednesday with a 372-point edge over Wong in OPS for the season, and the upgrade McGuire offers with the bat may be enough for him to eventually usurp Wong atop the depth chart.

Impact Though he appeared to be in the short side of a platoon at catcher with the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire to begin the season, Wong seems to have at least temporarily emerged as the Red Sox's preferred backstop against both right- and left-handed pitching. Wong will be starting again with the Tigers bringing a lefty (Matthew Boyd) to the hill for the second straight day, but the 26-year-old catcher also started over McGuire on two of the last four occasions Boston opposed right-handed pitchers. Wong is hitting just .125/.176/.188 through 17 plate appearances, but he seems to be earning extra time on the basis of McGuire's inability to control the run game. Despite logging only 36 innings behind the dish this season, McGuire has allowed a league-leading 14 stolen bases and hasn't thrown out a would-be base stealer.
