MLB 2026 Buzz: Francisco Lindor 'Going to Be Down For Quite A Bit'

On bench again Tuesday Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Impact It's the third straight game on the bench for Wong after starting the previous three contests. The 29-year-old's .885 OPS in 27 plate appearances this year is far superior to Carlos Narvaez's .542 mark, though Narvaez now appears to have the upper hand for playing time after a strong couple games at the plate.

Taking seat again Monday Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers.

Impact After a stretch of three consecutive starts behind the plate, Wong will end up ceding catching duties to Carlos Narvaez for the second day in a row. With an .885 OPS compared to Narvaez's .449 mark on the season, Wong has been the far more productive hitter of the two, so the Red Sox could still view him as Option 1A at catcher for the time being.

Draws first start Wong started at catcher and went 2-for-3 with a double in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Reds.

Impact Wong made his first start of the season, as Carlos Narvaez was given a breather. The former also made an appearance in Saturday's game and didn't have a good at-bat while striking out in the 10th inning. That was a stark reminder of the struggles he endured in 2025, when Wong batted .190 with a .500 OPS and lost the starting gig to Narvaez. As such, Sunday's two-hit effort was an encouraging sign for the backup catcher, who slashed .121/.216/.152 in spring training.

Set for backup catcher role in 2026 Wong (hand) took part in live batting practice Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Impact Wong reported to camp last week and appears to be fully healthy after he underwent a carpal boss excision procedure on his right hand back on Oct. 9. The hand issue perhaps played a factor in Wong's dramatic drop in production in 2025, when OPS fell down to .500 over his 188 plate appearances after he had posted a .758 OPS the season prior. Carlos Narvaez ended up overtaking Wong on the depth chart, and manager Alex Cora relayed Saturday that Narvaez "earned the right" to be the team's starter heading into 2026, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. Cora added that Wong's solid defense behind the plate should allow him to play more frequently than the typical backup catcher, and the 29-year-old could also be an option to make starts first base when Willson Contreras needs a day off.
