Orioles rally, beat Blue Jays 6-5 to end 20-game road skid

Allows two runs Thursday Sulser gave up two runs on two hits and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning during Thursday's 10-3 loss to Cleveland.
Impact The right-hander was able to get the last two outs of the fifth inning after Jorge Lopez exited the game. Sulser continued in the sixth inning, but allowed two batters to reach before Dillon Tate replaced him and allowed both inherited runners to score. Sulser has hit a rough patch with three runs allowed in his last 2.2 innings after a stretch of 8.2 scoreless frames. He has a 2.59 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 36:8 K:BB across 24.1 innings. He's added a 2-0 record, one save and one hold in 22 outings. Playing for cellar-dwelling Baltimore hasn't provided many high-leverage opportunities for most of the relievers on the roster.

Earns win Friday Sulser (2-0) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win against Cleveland on Friday.
Impact Sulser earned his first save of the season in his last outing, and he was able to pick up his second win of the year Friday. The right-hander was used in a save situation Tuesday, and he's part of a late-inning mix that includes Cesar Valdez, Cole Sulser and Paul Fry, who picked up the save Friday.

Records first save Sulser had a strikeout and a walk with a hit allowed over a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save during Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Twins.
Impact The right-hander received his first save chance of the season and came through despite allowing a couple baserunners. Sulser had five saves for the Orioles before losing the closer's role last season, but he's primarily been limited to middle relief in 2021.

Scoreless streak at six innings Sulser logged a perfect inning with two strikeouts in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the White Sox.
Impact Sulser has kept runs off the board in his last six outings, allowing only two hits and four walks in six innings in that span. The right-hander has been effective in a low-leverage role this year. He's posted a 1.89 ERA, .095 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB in 19 innings overall. Sulser also has a win and a hold, but he hasn't been considered for the few save chances the last-place Orioles have produced -- Cesar Valdez has often worked as the closer this year.
MAY 30, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Logs 1.2 scoreless frames Sulser allowed a walk and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 13-6 loss to Tampa Bay.
Impact The right-hander was the only one of five Baltimore pitchers to keep runs off the board in Tuesday's blowout loss. Sulser has pitched to a 2.45 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 23:3 K:BB across 14.2 innings this season. He's picked up a win and a hold in 11 outings, but the reliever hasn't seen much high-leverage work despite his sharp numbers. He had allowed three runs in his last two innings prior to his solid showing Tuesday.

Relief win Sulser (1-0) pitched a perfect seventh with one strikeout to earn the win as Baltimore beat Seattle, 5-3 on Monday.
Impact Sulser found himself in line for the win after he pitched a clean bottom of the seventh and Baltimore scored five in the top of the eighth to take the lead. He's been nearly spotless in a middle-relief role this season, allowing a single run in 9.1 total innings, so the first win was well-deserved.

Logs two perfect innings Sulser pitched two perfect innings and struck out three in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Athletics.
Impact Sulser retired the side on groundouts in the seventh inning, then struck out the side in the eighth. The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed five hits and struck out 10 over 6.1 scoreless innings to begin 2021. Sulser is expected to mainly work in a low-leverage role, but he's pitched well so far.

Rejoins big-league club Sulser was recalled from the alternate training site Sunday.
Impact The 31-year-old joined Baltimore as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader, but he returned to the alternate site after delivering a scoreless frame. Sulser has a 5:0 K:BB through three innings across his first two appearances of the season.

Returned to alternate camp Sulser was returned to the Orioles' alternate training site Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Sulser was called up as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against Seattle. He appeared in the second game of the twin bill and allowed one hit and no walks while striking out two in one scoreless inning. He's now tossed three scoreless innings in two relief appearances this year but will continue to work at the team's alternate camp.

Up as 27th man Sulser was added as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Mariners.
Impact Sulser logged two scoreless innings with three strikeouts prior to getting sent down earlier this season. He will offer bullpen depth during the twin bill before being sent back to the alternate site.
APRIL 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to alternate camp Sulser was optioned to the Orioles' alternate training site Monday.
Impact Sulser was effective in his 2021 debut Sunday, as he allowed one hit and no walks while striking out three in two scoreless innings. However, he'll now be sent down by Baltimore after right-hander Shawn Armstrong was recalled from the COVID-19 injured list in a corresponding move.
APRIL 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Posts two scoreless innings Sulser allowed a hit and struck out three over two innings in Sunday's 11-3 win over the Red Sox.
Impact Sulser was one of the Orioles last additions to their Opening Day roster, and Sunday was his first appearance of the year. He finished 2020 with a 5.56 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 19:17 K:BB. While the right-hander saw save opportunities last year, he's expected to work more often in middle innings in 2021. Cesar Valdez, Tanner Scott and Shawn Armstrong are expected to share closing duties.
APRIL 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Wins roster spot Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Sulser will be included on the Opening Day roster, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact Though he had a brief run as the Orioles' closer in 2020, Sulser's rough finish to the past season meant that he had to battle for a bullpen job in spring training. He was able to lock down a spot by holding opposing hitters to a .118 average over his five innings this spring, though both of the hits that he gave up were home runs. The Orioles' closing situation remains unsettled heading into Opening Day, but Sulser isn't believed to be part of the conversation at the moment. Instead, Tanner Scott, Shawn Armstrong and Cesar Valdez likely profile as the top options for saves.

Removed from closer role Sulser will not be the Orioles' closer going forward, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact Sulser has saved five games for the Orioles this season but has blown three more opportunities. He's given up runs in each of his last four outings, walking eight batters in five innings over that stretch. His 4.70 ERA, 21.2 percent strikeout rate and 19.7 percent walk rate are all far from closer material. Hunter Harvey and Miguel Castro could be the primary ninth-inning options in Baltimore now, as Mychal Givens was traded to the Rockies on Sunday.
