First career start coming Wednesday Ellis is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Angels, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact The 28-year-old right-hander will at least temporarily step into the rotation as a replacement for Jorge Lopez, who was moved to the bullpen after losing his 14th game of the season Aug. 19 in Tampa Bay. After being scooped up off waivers from the Rays last weekend, Ellis has yet to make his Orioles debut, but he'll be making his first MLB start in a head-to-head matchup with Shohei Ohtani. Ellis tossed four scoreless innings of long relief in his last appearance with the Rays on Aug. 17, so he should be capable of giving Baltimore a decent amount of length Wednesday.

Earns win in season debut Ellis (1-0) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven across four scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Orioles.

Impact Ellis followed Drew Rasmussen and Adam Conley into the game and threw the final four innings to earn the win in his season debut. He wasn't pitching in a high-leverage scenario -- he entered the game with an eight-run lead -- but the performance was impressive nevertheless. He generated 16 swinging strikes on only 62 pitches, backing up his seven punchouts. Ellis worked primarily as a starter with Triple-A Durham and struggled to a 6.32 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 57 frames prior to being called up. While those numbers cast some doubt on his ability to carry this type of performance forward, the Rays' ability to put their pitchers in a position to succeed should aid Ellis to close the season.
