Tucker Barnhart - Sits in second straight Barnhart is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins.
Impact Barnhart had started behind the dish in the Cubs' first two games since Yan Gomes suffered a head injury Monday that was later diagnosed as a concussion, but rookie Miguel Amaya will now make a second consecutive start Friday while Barnhart retreats to the bench. Though Barnhart is the more battle-tested backstop and the superior defensive option, his puny .449 OPS over 42 plate appearances has opened the door for Amaya to perhaps become part of a timeshare at the position while Gomes is on the 7-day inured list.

Yan Gomes - Light baseball activities Gomes (concussion) will go through conditioning and light baseball activities Friday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact It's a significant first step as Gomes eases back into things following a concussion. The veteran catcher will be eligible for activation on May 9 and we should have a better idea over the weekend as to whether he might have a shot to return that day.

Codi Heuer - Starting rehab assignment Heuer (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact It will be the first game action for Heuer since he underwent Tommy John surgery last March. Because he's missed so much time, a lengthy rehab assignment figures to be in order. He could eventually work his way into high-leverage relief spots for the Cubs.

Eric Hosmer - Sitting out Friday Hosmer is not in the Cubs' lineup for Friday's game versus the Marlins, Ryan Herrera of AllCHGO.com reports.
Impact Matt Mervis is making his major-league debut at first base and Trey Mancini is in the designated hitter spot. Hosmer has retained his spot on the roster for now, but it's difficult to see him fitting with the Cubs over the long haul with Mervis now around.
