Sharp in spring debut Paddack worked two scoreless innings Monday in the Padres' 1-0 loss to the Cubs in Cactus League play. He gave up no hits and one walk while striking out three.
Impact After a rocky 2020 season, Paddack appeared to recapture his impressive 2019 rookie form in his spring debut. He allowed only one baserunner on the afternoon and had his changeup working, inducing swinging strikeouts from Anthony Rizzo and David Bote with that offering. The changeup should remain Paddack's top weapon in 2021, but he'll need to find more success with his four-seamer to deliver a bounce-back season. He spent much of the offseason refining his fastball mechanics, and the initial returns were encouraging. His other strikeout on the day came when Javier Baez swung and missed at a two-strike heater.

Diagnosed with forearm tightness Castillo was diagnosed with forearm tightness Tuesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Castillo has dealt with a long list of injuries in recent seasons and suffered another one during his first live batting practice session of the year. Forearm tightness can sometimes be the first sign of a more serious injury; we'll know more after he undergoes another evaluation Wednesday.

Impact Stock was designated for assignment Sunday but will remain in camp as a non-roster invitee. His 4.24 ERA in 63.2 career inning at the major-league level is probably good enough to earn him some low-leverage opportunities for the big club at some point this season.

Impact Underwood is the roster casualty as the Cubs officially add recent signing Ryan Tepera to the roster. Underwood owns a 5.20 ERA in 36.1 career innings at the big-league level, but his 27:6 K:BB in 20.2 frames last year was quite strong, which could make him a fairly interesting option on the waiver wire.
