Off until Monday, innings limit on tap
Manager Terry Francona said that Burns won't make his next start until Sept. 7 against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and the Reds intend to monitor his innings and pitch counts for t...
Impact
Though his outing next Monday could more closely resemble his first 26 starts of the season, Burns will be operating with restrictions the rest of the way since he's already amassed 145.1 innings in 2026, surpassing his 2025 total by more than 30 innings. More specifically, Francona mentioned that he plans to have Brandon Williamson (shoulder) -- who is set to return from the 60-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Padres -- piggyback the 23-year-old Burns whenever the latter's turn in the rotation comes up in September. With a 65-72 record, the Reds are virtually eliminated from playoff contention, so ensuring the long-term health of their young ace will take on added import over the final month of a non-contending season.

Picks up 15th win
Burns (15-3) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven.
Impact
Burns surrendered a leadoff homer to Pete Crow-Armstrong but was able to turn in a fairly respectable outing, falling one out shy of a quality start. The hard-throwing right-hander took a step back in August, posting a 4.13 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB across 32.2 innings (six starts) in the month. Overall, Burns owns a stellar 2.79 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 171:50 K:BB through 145.1 innings (26 starts). His next start is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Brewers.

Ambushed in third loss
Burns (14-3) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.2 innings against the Giants. He struck out five.
Impact
Burns was blitzed by the Giants offense, allowing two runs in the first inning before surrendering a three-run homer to Rafael Devers in the second frame. Monday marked the right-hander's shortest outing of the year, as he had logged at least five innings in every previous start. Burns has looked more human in August, pitching to a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 36:8 K:BB across 27 innings (five starts) this month. Overall, the 23-year-old owns a sterling 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 164:49 K:BB across 139.2 innings (25 starts) and will look to get back on track next time out, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Cubs.

Excellent campaign continues
Burns took a no-decision against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out eight.
Impact
Burns labored a bit Wednesday, needing 104 pitches to complete five innings, but he recorded at least six punchouts in his fourth consecutive start. The hard-throwing right-hander has been incredibly consistent to this point, working at least five frames in all 24 outings while conceding more than two runs just four times. Burns is set to take an outstanding 2.51 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 159:48 K:BB over 136 innings into a soft matchup with the lowly Giants.

Dazzles in Friday's win
Burns (14-2) picked up the win Friday, scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Marlins. He struck out eight without walking a batter.
Impact
Matched up against Sandy Alcantara in a duel of the team's respective aces that lived up to its billing, Burns rose to the occasion and fired 62 of 93 pitches for strikes while not even allowing a runner to get into scoring position until the seventh inning, when Otto Lopez led off the frame with a single and stole second base before being stranded. The quality start was Burns' 11th of the year, and his 14 wins has him tied for second in the majors with Boston's Sonny Gray, one back of Philly's Cristopher Sanchez. Burns will look to stay locked in for his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Cardinals.

Tagged for five runs in loss
Burns (13-2) took the loss against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six across 5.1 innings.
Impact
It looked like business as usual through five innings for Burns outside of a two-run single he gave up in the third. However, he allowed four of the five batters he faced in the sixth on base and was tagged for three runs in the frame. It was the third time this season that Burns yielded five runs in a start, and he came away with his first loss since April 10 against the Angels. It has still been a stellar season for the 23-year-old right-hander, whose 13 wins is tied for third-most in the majors. Burns will take a 2.61 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 124 innings into his next start, which is lined up for next weekend at home against the Marlins.

Cruises to 13th win
Burns (13-1) notched the win Sunday against the Pirates, allowing one run on two hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out nine.
Impact
Pittsburgh managed to scratch a run across in the fourth inning, but Burns was his usual dominant self otherwise Sunday. The first-time All-Star has now fanned at least six in 15 of his 21 starts this season, and he's remarkably worked at least five innings while giving up two runs or fewer in all but three of his outings. Burns has an exceptional 2.35 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 137:43 K:BB over 118.2 innings, but he has a tough test in Washington lined up for his next appearance.
