Enters for injured Brantley
McCormick replaced an injured Michael Brantley (wrist) and went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 9-1 victory over Oakland.
Impact
Brantley was plunked in the first inning and didn't come out for the second. X-rays came back negative, but Brantley is day-to-day. McCormick could get a start or two in left field. Houston finishes out the series in Oakland on Sunday, then have a two-game set against the Angels on Monday and Tuesday before its first off day Wednesday.

Plays CF in 'B' game
McCormick started in center field during a "B" game against the Marlins on Sunday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
McCormick has more familiarity with corner outfield, but he could be pressed into duty in center field pending the status of Myles Straw, who is away from the club for health and safety protocols. If Straw's status prevents him from playing when the regular season begins, then McCormick or Kyle Tucker could start in center field. Neither player has much experience at the position, but both of been exposed to it during spring training. The Astros have other in-house options with more experience in center, but they present 40-man roster complications.

Breaking camp with big club
The Astros informed McCormick on Sunday that he will be included on the team's Opening Day roster, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Heading into the weekend, McCormick already looked to be in decent shape to make the roster as a reserve outfielder, but Myles Straw's placement in MLB's COVID-19 health and safety protocol was enough for McCormick to officially secure his spot with Houston. Provided Straw hasn't tested positive for the virus and is able to clear the protocol before Opening Day, he should still be in line for primary duties in center field, with McCormick representing his top backup. McCormick has posted strong walk rates throughout his minor-league career, and while he lacks Straw's high-end speed, he boasts the far more potent bat of the two. McCormick could get an opportunity in center field if Straw falters in his first taste of everyday playing time in the majors.

More playing time expected
Houston manager Dusty Baker said he plans to give McCormick more playing time over the next week, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Baker said McCormick has put a lot of pressure on himself during spring training as he's competed for the fourth outfielder job with Jose Siri and Steven Souza. McCormick went 1-for-2 with a walk in Monday's game and was 2-for-14 prior to that. The manager said all three outfielders will get more run in the next week or so, which will help him make a determination about the roster's composition.

Competing for roster spot
McCormick is competing for a reserve role in the Astros' outfield this spring, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
McCormick was on the Astros' roster for the Wild Card and ALDS playoff series, though he never made it on the field. Entering 2021, he's set to fight for the fourth outfielder role with Jose Siri and Steven Souza. If McCormick wins that competition, he could contribute on the basepaths as he swiped 16 bags across 110 games between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Round Rock in 2019.

Bumped off ALCS roster
The Astros optioned McCormick to their taxi squad Sunday ahead of Game 1 of the team's ALCS matchup with the Rays, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Though McCormick was included on the Astros' roster for each of the previous two rounds of the postseason, he didn't get the chance to make his MLB debut. Rather than keeping McCormick around for the ALCS as a luxury fifth outfielder, Houston decided to swap him out for a long-relief option in Chase De Jong.
