Rockies take road losing streak into matchup against the Athletics

The Colorado Rockies will attempt to end their three-game road skid in a matchup with the Athletics

Impact Sullivan has hit four homers this season, all coming since May 26. Over his last nine games, he has gone 8-for-21 (.381) despite filling a backup role. While his bat has improved lately, Sullivan is no real threat to Hunter Goodman's status as the Rockies' starting catcher. On the year, Sullivan is batting .229 with a .679 OPS, 13 RBI, seven runs scored, six doubles and no stolen bases over 104 plate appearances.

Swats two homers in loss Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs in a loss to the Cubs on Thursday.

Impact Sullivan got the start behind the plate and batted out of the No. 9 slot in the order. He hit two of Colorado's three long balls (all solo shots) to post the first multi-homer game of his career. In fact, coming into Thursday, Sullivan had gone deep just three times across 206 career MLB plate appearances. Sullivan's performance against the Cubs was also his first multi-hit effort since April 29, and with one of baseball's most productive hitting catchers (Hunter Goodman) ahead of him on the depth chart, Sullivan doesn't figure to see extensive playing time moving forward.

Despite the recent uptick in playing time, Sullivan is unlikely to move into a full-time role so long as top backstop Hunter Goodman is healthy.

Impact Though top backstop Hunter Goodman will remain in the lineup at designated hitter Sunday, he has yet to resume catching since suffering a right middle finger laceration in Thursday's 7-3 loss. Sullivan will pick up his third consecutive start as a result, but since the Rockies haven't been compelled to call up another catcher from the minors, Goodman will presumably return to action behind the plate in the near future. Sullivan's playing time will tail off considerably at that point.

Impact Sullivan beat out Braxton Fulford for the Rockies' backup catcher gig during spring training. The Rockies are expected to formally select Sullivan's contract Friday, when the team sets its final roster ahead of the season opener in Miami. Sullivan split time between the Padres and Pirates organizations in 2025, seeing action in only three games in the majors while slashing .207/.264/.325 with four home runs and six stolen bases across 295 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He's expected to play sparingly behind top backstop Hunter Goodman.
