Impact Basso has been held out of action since early March due to a left shoulder strain. It's still unknown how far he is from a return to the mound, though it will certainly not be within the first 15 days of the season. Whenever he is able to return, he'll likely be optioned out to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Shut down with shoulder strain Basso has been shut down after being diagnosed with a left shoulder strain, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Impact There's no timetable for when Basso might be ready to return, but it is likely to be a lengthy absence for the left-hander. Basso -- who has thrown 4.1 scoreless and hitless innings this spring -- likely was going to start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas but now will be rehabbing an injury.

Optioned by Oakland Oakland optioned Basso to the Athletics' Arizona Complex League on Friday.

Impact The move makes room on the A's 28-man roster for the reinstatement of right-hander Ross Stripling (back) from the 15-day injured list. Basso has made four starts for the Athletics in September, and over those outings he went 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB over 19 innings.

The lefty then got tagged for a two-run homer in the third after giving up a leadoff single to begin the frame and he would not return for the fourth. However, Wednesday's five runs allowed marked a season high for the 26-year-old, as did the two long balls he surrendered in the contest.

It's the first time in three big-league starts that Busso has failed to complete five frames, and only the second time in six appearances he's been charged with any earned runs at all.
