Likely out until postseason
The Padres don't expect Snell (groin) to pitch again in a game setting until the postseason, should San Diego secure a wild-card spot,
Impact
The second-place finisher in the National League West -- the Giants or Dodgers -- has already locked up the first wild-card spot, while less than three games separate the Cardinals, Phillies, Padres and Reds for the second and final postseason berth. Even though the Padres are still in contention, the decimated state of the pitching staff coupled with the team's sluggish offense in recent weeks have seemingly left San Diego limping to the finish line. With that in mind, Snell appears more likely than not to be done for 2021, as he has yet to resume throwing since sustaining the left adductor strain during his Sept. 12 start. If the Padres are on the brink of elimination during the final week of the regular season, there's a high likelihood the team won't entertain having Snell ramp up and instead hand him ample recovery time to overcome the injury. Snell has largely failed to meet expectations during his first season in San Diego, but before going down with the injury, he had usurped Yu Darvish as the team's clear No. 1 starter since the beginning of August. Over his last eight starts, Snell turned in a 1.83 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and a 65:14 K:BB across 44.1 innings.

Shifts to injured list
Snell was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left adductor groin strain.
Impact
Snell was removed from Sunday's start against the Dodgers after only 11 pitches due to the injury, and he'll require stint on the injured list before rejoining the rotation. The left-hander was initially expected to be ready to make his next start, but he's continued to feel soreness over the past couple days and will miss some time. Vince Velasquez signed a minor-league deal with the Friars and is expected to fill Snell's spot in the rotation for now.

Groin still feeling sore

Impact
While he said he's hopeful Snell will still be ready to make his next turn through the rotation this weekend in St. Louis, Tingler acknowledged the possibility of the team having to turn to another pitcher to make a spot start. The San Diego rotation has been ravaged by injuries throughout the second half, and Snell's bout with adductor tightness comes at particularly tough time after Chris Paddack (elbow) landed on the injured list Monday.

Dealing with left adductor injury
Snell left Sunday's game against the Dodgers due to left adductor tightness.
Impact
Snell removed himself from Sunday's game after throwing just 11 pitches, and he had a slight limp as he left the field. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will be forced to miss his next turn through the rotation, but he tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against St. Louis on Friday.

Leaves game with apparent injury
Snell exited Sunday's game against the Dodgers in the bottom of the first inning with an apparent injury, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Snell appeared to hurt himself while throwing his 11th pitch of the game Sunday, and he immediately removed himself from the contest and limped off the field under his own power. The exact nature and severity of the issue aren't yet known, and it's not clear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time.

Unfortunate loser Tuesday
Snell (7-6) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Angels despite tossing seven innings of two-run ball, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 11.
Impact
Snell had an excellent outing and tossed 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes while posting double-digit strikeouts for the third straight start. However, he was the victim of poor run support since the Padres only mustered four hits throughout the entire game. It's worth noting that Snell has tossed at least seven frames while allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last three starts, a span in which he's also posted an excellent 31:4 K:BB across 21.2 innings.

Tosses seven no-hit innings
Snell (7-5) earned the win over Arizona on Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless and hitless innings during which he walked two batters and struck out 10.
Impact
Snell came within six outs of pitching his first career no-hitter, but manager Jayce Tingler elected to pull him from the game after 107 pitches. The fact that the left-hander threw a career-high 122 pitches in his previous outing likely contributed to his removal, and Snell said after the game that the decision was "just smart," according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The 28-year-old punched out 10 batters for the second straight outing and induced an impressive 19 swinging strikes while extending his recent run of strong starts -- he has now allowed three or fewer runs in each of his past six outings, posting a 1.72 ERA and 54:12 K:BB across 36.2 innings over that stretch. Snell's next start will likely come at home against the Angels early next week.
