Impact The 28-year-old was optioned to the alternate training site in mid-April and has now been removed from Cleveland's 40-man roster. Gamel spent the first couple weeks of the season in the majors and went 1-for-14 in 11 appearances.

Impact Gamel had minimal time in the starting lineup to begin the season and hit .071 with a double and one run in 17 plate appearances. He'll now be removed from the major-league roster after left-hander Sam Hentges was recalled from the alternate training site in a corresponding move.

Impact The lefty-hitting Gamel's absence from the lineup for the first two games of the series wasn't a surprise with southpaws Derek Holland and Tarik Skubal making starts for Detroit, but the outfielder will be taking a seat Sunday with right-hander Jose Urena on the bump for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Amed Rosario will be making his third straight start in center field, perhaps signaling that manager Terry Francona has at least temporarily elected to abandon the platoon of Gamel and Jordan Luplow at the position. Impact Gamel's injury has been diagnosed as a quadriceps strain, and it will indeed cost him the remainder of the regular season. The team's hottest hitter coming out of summer camp, Gamel ended up slashing just .237/.315/.404 with three homers in 127 plate appearances. Tyrone Taylor and Jace Peterson are now the team's top reserve outfielders.
