Paul Zeise: The Pirates' handling of Bryan Reynolds makes little sense The Pirates are apparently still haggling with their best player, Bryan Reynolds, over $650,000 or so. That’s a lot of money to you and me,...

Keegan Akin - Likely to work in tandem role Akin allowed one run on three hits and a walk and struck out two in three innings versus the Pirates on Thursday.
Impact Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports Akin and Tyler Wells could work as a pitching tandem early in the season as both look to get stretched out after a condensed spring training. Wells is already locked in for the rotation, but Akin would likely have more upside for vulturing wins in the early going. Of course, the Orioles aren't expected to be that competitive this season, so the upside is minimal. Akin posted a 6.63 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 82:40 K:BB in 95 innings last season, making 17 of his 24 appearances as a starter. Whether as a starter or a reliever, the southpaw would need to make significant strides to draw much fantasy interest.

Anthony Santander - Drives in two Thursday Santander went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in Thursday's 4-4 tie versus the Pirates.
Impact Santander has gone 4-for-19 with four RBI, a home run and two doubles in seven Grapefruit League games. The outfielder is expected to start the season as the primary right fielder, though the switch-hitter could lose some at-bats to southpaws with Trey Mancini getting a look in right field as well. Santander disappointed a bit last season, posting a .241/.286/.433 slash line with 18 homers, 50 RBI, 54 runs scored and a stolen base. He also struck out 23.1 percent last year, compared to 15.2 percent in 2020, so he'll need to cut down on the whiffs to maintain a near-everyday role.

Jared Oliva - Loses roster spot Oliva was designated for assignment Thursday.
Impact Oliva had already been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, though he's now lost his grip on a roster spot with the team. Once a relatively well-regarded prospect, Oliva posted only a .249/.321/.364 line across 249 plate appearances with Indianapolis in 2021. The move makes room for Josh VanMeter, who was acquired by the Pirates on Thursday.

Josh VanMeter - Gets a shot in Pittsburgh VanMeter was traded by the Diamondbacks to the Pirates on Thursday in exchange for Listher Sosa.
Impact VanMeter was designated for assignment Sunday, though he should now have the opportunity to open the season in the majors. His ultimate role will likely be as a utility player and bench bat, but VanMeter could draw starts at third base if Ke'Bryan Hayes (ankle) is not healthy to begin the season. Across 310 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks in 2021, VanMeter hit only .212/.297/.354.

Ke'Bryan Hayes - Runs at 50 percent Thursday Hayes (ankle) ran at 50 percent and took grounders Thursday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact Hayes suffered a minor right ankle sprain in a workout last weekend but has been able to continue participating in baseball activities other than baserunning. It was encouraging to see him run in a straight line Thursday, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to miss any time to begin the regular season. If the 25-year-old can run at full intensity in the coming days, it wouldn't be surprising to see him avoid a trip to the injured list.
