LSU coach: Skenes so hot, he could handle big-league batters

LSU's Paul Skenes has established himself as the most dominant pitcher in the country through the first month of the season

Jose Miranda - Expected to play first base Tuesday Miranda (shoulder) is expected to play first base for the Twins on Tuesday in their Grapefruit League contest versus the Rays, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Miranda has been limited to designated hitter duties while he works through some soreness in his right shoulder, but he's been throwing from 120 feet without issue lately. The plan is to mostly play him at third base this season and the club would like to get him into some spring games at the hot corner, but they could ease him back into things are first base initially, especially if Alex Kirilloff (wrist) isn't available. The shoulder has not affected Miranda at the plate, which his 1.079 OPS and three homers this spring can attest.

Alex Kirilloff - Might not be ready for Opening Day Kirilloff (wrist) might not be ready in time for Opening Day, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Kirilloff was able to play in a minor-league game Saturday but has yet to see any Grapefruit League action as the Twins ease him into things following another right wrist surgery. While president of baseball operations Derek Falvey has said the team hasn't made a decision yet on whether Kirilloff will be part of the Opening Day roster, it seems likely at this point that he'll just run out of time. Kirilloff does have options remaining, so the club could stash him at Triple-A St. Paul for a bit if he needs to knock some rust off. If that happens, Joey Gallo, Jose Miranda and Donovan Solano are among the candidates to handle first base in Kirilloff's absence.

Dylan Lee - Locked in this spring Lee gave up a hit and struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins.
Impact The 28-year-old is coming off an impressive 2022 campaign in the Atlanta bullpen, and Lee has carried that forward into the spring with an 8:0 K:BB through 5.1 scoreless innings. He's still the team's No. 2 left-handed relief option after A.J. Minter, which could limit him to middle relief rather than a consistent set-up role, but after recording nine holds in 46 appearances last year, Lee seems a pretty safe bet to at least reach double digits in 2023.

Marcell Ozuna - Slugs first spring homer Ozuna went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins.
Impact He took Kenta Maeda deep in the third inning, giving Ozuna his first homer of the spring. The 32-year-old slugger is gaining momentum at the plate as Opening Day approaches, and he's now batting .270 (10-for-37) this spring, with half of his hits going for extra bases.

Max Fried - Blanks Twins Fried allowed one hit and two walks over 6.1 scoreless innings while striking out five in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins.
Impact It was another impressive spring outing for the southpaw, who sports a 14:4 K:BB through 11.1 Grapefruit League innings without giving up a run. Fried remains in line to get the Opening Day assignment for Atlanta, although manager Brian Snitker has yet to make an announcement, and the 29-year-old is coming off a season in which he posted a 2.48 ERA and career-best 1.01 WHIP in a career-high 185.1 innings.
