INJURIES

Sits in favor of Dubon Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Boston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Jeremy Pena (knee) remains on the bench for the fourth game in a row, but Diaz will take a seat in favor of the newly-acquired Mauricio Dubon after starting at shortstop in each of the Astros' three contests over the weekend. Diaz, who recently overcame a nagging undisclosed injury of his own, went 4-for13 with a run and an RBI during the Astros' series victory in Washington.

Starting Friday Diaz (undisclosed) is starting Friday against the Nationals.
Impact The 31-year-old sat out recently due to a nagging unspecified injury, but he entered Thursday's matchup against the Twins after Jeremy Pena (knee) was removed from the game. Diaz went 0-for-2 with a strikeout against Minnesota, but he'll start at shortstop and bat seventh in his return to the lineup Friday.

Still hampered by injury Manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that Diaz continues to tend to a nagging unspecified injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact The injury first surfaced Sunday, when Diaz went 2-for-3 with a grand slam before departing the Astros' 5-0 win over the Tigers in the eighth inning. He hasn't appeared off the bench since and will remain out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale with the Twins. Baker said he's hopeful Diaz will be able to pick up a start at some point during the Astros' three-game series in Washington this weekend, so whatever is bothering the veteran infielder doesn't appear to be too significant.

Exits Sunday with injury Diaz was removed in the top of the eighth inning of Sunday's 5-0 win over the Tigers with an apparent injury, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. He went 2-for-3 with...
Impact According to Lerner, Diaz looked to have experienced some discomfort during his final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, when he grounded out to second base. Per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, manager Dusty Baker said Diaz was dealing with some "nagging stuff," so he should be considered day-to-day for now. Diaz stayed in the contest to play the field for an inning before Jeremy Pena was summoned from the bench to replace him. The injury was a down note on an otherwise productive day for Diaz, whose second home of the season effectively decided the game.
MAY 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Smaller role awaits Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mariners.
Impact With Jose Altuve (hamstring) returning from the 10-day injured list Monday and reclaiming his spot as the Astros' everyday second baseman, Diaz's playing time is likely to take a substantial hit. He had been filling in at the position for the past two weeks along with Niko Goodrum, with Diaz starting in eight of the 12 games that Altuve missed. Diaz's versatility gives him some other avenues to at-bats, but with all of the Astros' key position players at full strength, the 31-year-old will only pick up starts when one of the regulars requires a breather.

Bichette homers, Gausman fans 10 as Blue Jays top Astros 3-2

Santiago Espinal drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh inning, Bo Bichette added a two-run home run, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Houston Astros 3-2

Takes seat Saturday Diaz isn't starting Saturday against the Blue Jays, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Diaz will get a breather after he went 0-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts in the last three games. Niko Goodrum will start at the keystone and bat second Saturday.
APRIL 30, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Primary replacement for Altuve Diaz will start at second base and bat sixth in Thursday's game against the Rangers.
Impact Diaz will start at the keystone for the fourth time in five games and appears to the preferred option at the position over Niko Goodrum while Jose Altuve (hamstring) is on the injured list. Astros general manager James Click said that Altuve is expected to be activated ahead of Monday's game against the Mariners, so Diaz's time as a near-everyday player should soon come to an end.
APRIL 28, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Sharing keystone with Goodrum Diaz will start at second base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.
Impact Diaz and Niko Goodrum have now alternated starts at the keystone for five straight games following Jose Altuve's (hamstring) placement on the 10-day injured list. Though Diaz draws the start Sunday with southpaw Yusei Kikuchi on the mound for Toronto, it's not entirely clear if the Astros plan to deploy a platoon arrangement between the righty-hitting Diaz and the switch-hitting Goodrum while Altuve is on the shelf.

Stuck in bench role Diaz will return to the bench for Monday's game against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Diaz enjoyed a run of five consecutive starts from April 8 through 13, but his playing time has tailed off following Yuli Gurriel's recent return from paternity leave. He'll be on the bench Monday for the third time in four games, and at-bats are likely to become even harder to come by for Diaz with Yordan Alvarez (illness) making his return to the lineup after a five-game stint on the COVID-19 injured list.
APRIL 18, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Smacks solo shot Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in a 13-6 triumph over the Angels.
Impact Diaz tied the game with one of six Houston home runs in the fourth inning and later singled home another run in the seventh. The utility man should see semi-regular at-bats this season in a fill-in roll throughout the infield and has shown the ability to hold down an opportunity if it arises.
APRIL 9, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Friday Diaz is starting Friday's game against the Angels, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Diaz didn't appear in Thursday's Opening Day win over the Angels, but he should serve as the primary first baseman in the coming days after Yuli Gurriel was placed on the paternity list Friday. Diaz will bat fifth against left-hander Reid Detmers.
APRIL 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Making $4.45 million Diaz signed a one-year, $4.45 million contract with the Astros on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact The agreement means Diaz will avoid arbitration in his final year of eligibility. The utility infielder is coming off a season in which he hit .259/.317/.405 in 84 games, good for a 99 wRC+.

How might Houston Astros replace Carlos Correa at shortstop?
Homers, drives in three Diaz went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 10-5 win over the Angels.
Impact Diaz hit a solo home run off Packy Naughton as a part of back-to-back home runs in the second inning. In addition, he drove in a pair of runs on a fourth-inning single. However, he is batting just .140 with a .499 OPS in his last 18 games. For the season, the 30-year-old is slashing .273/.332/.428 with eight long balls, 44 RBI and 28 runs scored in 295 plate appearances.

Steps in for resting Correa Diaz started at shortstop for a resting Carlos Correa and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-2 win over Texas.
Impact Gone are the days of July and August when Diaz was a daily member of the starting lineup, filling in for the then-injured Alex Bregman. He batted .337 with an .893 OPS while getting consistent at-bats over 24 games. Since Bregman's return, Diaz has received sporadic playing time and is 4-for-44 (.091) over 15 games.

Fills in for slumping Altuve Diaz started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 10-2 loss to San Diego.
Impact Altuve was given the day off Saturday after a dismal 4-for-37 funk, which caused him to show frustration during Friday's 6-3 win. Diaz, who had received regular at-bats as a fill-in at third base while Alex Bregman was unavailable, has been moved around the diamond to keep fresh, but he's 1-for-25 since Bregman returned to action Aug. 25. Saturday's start was his first since Tuesday.

Utility role beacons Diaz is expected to move into a utility role for the Astros moving forward after Alex Bregman (hamstring/quadriceps) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Jake Kap...
Impact Diaz has been a credible performer while filling in at third base for Bregman over the past month, hitting .337 with four home runs, 19 RBI and 11 runs in 24 games. According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Diaz will stick in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Royals as Houston's starting left fielder, but that's only because Michael Brantley is getting some routine maintenance for the day game after a night game. Expect Diaz to pick up a handful of starts per week now that Bregman is back in the fold.

On bench Saturday Diaz isn't starting Saturday's game against the Mariners, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Diaz will get a rare day off after he went 5-for-10 with two doubles, two RBI and a run across the last two games. Yuli Gurriel will shift to the hot corner while Taylor Jones starts at first base.
AUGUST 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Racks up two hits Friday Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double in Friday's 12-3 win over the Mariners.
Impact Per usual, Diaz started at third base for the injured Alex Bregman (quadriceps), who remains away from the team. The injured third baseman resumed his minor-league rehab Friday for Triple-A Sugar Land, his first game action since Aug. 7. It's uncertain how many games or plate appearances are needed before Bregman rejoins the Astros, but this is the first sign that Diaz's regular appearance in the starting lineup will be coming to a close soon.
AUGUST 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Extends hit streak Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and and an additional RBI in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Royals.
Impact Diaz extended a hit streak to eight games when he launched his seventh homer of the season to lead off the fifth inning. He later singled home a run but was cut down at second trying to stretch it into a double. He's hit safely in 16 of 17 games, going 25-for-72 (.347) with four home runs, five doubles, 16 RBI and 10 runs scored during that stretch. That level of production has been key for the Astros as Alex Bregman (quadriceps) is slow to return. The injured third baseman is waiting to start a second rehab appearance and may not be back until next week.
