Bounceback victory in Baltimore Wainwright (4-11) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out three.

Impact Wainwright held the first-place Orioles scoreless until the fifth inning, when the first three batters reached and two runs came around to score in the frame. The 42-year-old veteran left with a lead that would not be relinquished, earning his first win since June 17. In the 11 outings between wins, Wainwright went 0-10 with a 10.72 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and a lackluster 25:23 K:BB across 45.1 innings. He currently lines up for a home matchup with the Brewers in his next outing.

Impact Wainwright was working with extra rest having not pitched since Aug. 28, but that didn't help him against Atlanta's potent offense. The veteran was tagged for three runs in the first inning before settling down for three scoreless frames. However, Matt Olson slugged a solo shot in the fifth, and Atlanta struck for two more homers -- including Ronald Acuna's second of the contest -- in the sixth before Wainwright was pulled. It's been a rough campaign for the veteran right-hander, but until Thursday he hadn't surrendered more than two homers in any contest. Wainwright now holds an ugly 8.19 ERA and 1.98 WHIP through 89 innings on the season.

Impact It's been a brutal season for Wainwright and he couldn't catch a break Monday despite throwing a quality start. He tossed five shutout frames before the Padres finally broke through in the sixth inning. It was the first time he allowed fewer than three runs in a start since July 24 but he's still sporting an 8.10 ERA on the year. Wainwright is currently lined up to face the Pirates at home this weekend.

Impact Wainwright actually pitched well Thursday, logging his second quality start of the season while allowing just four hits. The only damage against the veteran right-hander came via a two-run homer from Pete Alonso in the fourth and an RBI double from Francisco Lindor in the fifth, though he also issued three walks on the afternoon. Wainwright still holds a 16.20 ERA through three August starts and he's now walked at least two batters in 11 of his 16 outings this season.

He is just two wins away from reaching 200 career victories, but the 41-year-old right-hander might actually have a better shot at achieving that milestone in a piggyback relief role. "He's appreciative that he's getting the opportunity [on Thursday], but he understands that things could change [in the future]."

Impact That wouldn't have been an unusual stat line in Colorado, but Friday's game was in St. Louis. Wainwright has yielded 13 runs over 14 innings while losing two of his three starts since he returned from a shoulder injury. The 41-year-old has a 7.81 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 39:26 K:BB through 65.2 innings through 14 starts overall. The Cardinals are essentially out of contention, so there's little chance they humiliate a franchise legend by removing him from the rotation over the last two months of the season. Wainwright is tentatively projected for a road start in Kansas City next week.

Impact Wainwright threw 76 pitches (47 strikes) in his return from a right shoulder strain. The 41-year-old did alright in a challenging matchup, most importantly by keeping the ball in the yard, something he did just once in his last five starts before landing on the injured list. At this point in his career, he's just a back-end starter that probably won't help much in fantasy. He carries a 7.31 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 31:21 K:BB through 56.2 innings over 12 starts, with his next outing likely at home versus the Cubs over the weekend.

Given that a projected 65-pitch workload would still make it tough for Wainwright to get through five innings, he could struggle to qualify for a win in his return to action. Wainwright tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn through the rotation coming next weekend at home versus the Cubs.

Impact Wainwright received two cortisone injections in his shoulder and back after landing on the injured list earlier this month with a right shoulder strain. He's felt dramatically better since then, including Tuesday during his first mound work since the injury. "I'd like to go ahead and pitch tomorrow after I felt the way I felt today," Wainwright said. The 41-year-old will throw a live batting practice session early next week which he hopes will be used in place of a rehab start. A return in late July or early August is looking probable.
