Earlier on "Big Noon Saturday," No. 23 Illinois (4-1) narrowly escaped No. 21 USC (4-1) in a Big Ten heavyweight battle at Memorial Stadium. It was the Trojans' first loss to the Fighting Illini on the road in Champaign.
