US Open gets a soggy start to the week at Oakmont, with Jordan Spieth among early arrivals

U.S. Open week is off to a soggy start at Oakmont

Alternate for U.S. Open Cole will be the second alternate from U.S. Open Final Qualifying in Columbus after falling in a 5-for-1 playoff to Cameron Young on Monday.

Impact The Columbus final qualifying site featured a number of heavy hitters who had played at the Memorial the day prior. Cole made 11 birdies over the 36 holes on Monday, but also added in six bogeys. It put him in a playoff with Young, Chase Johnson, Max Homa and Rickie Fowler with only one spot up for grabs in the U.S. Open. It was Young who ended the drama quickly with a birdie on the first playoff hole to lock up the final spot from Columbus, but there's a chance Cole still could find his way to Oakmont as an alternate. Cole's game has fallen off a bit this season, but he still has made the cut in nine of his last ten starts. He also has a pair of top-five finishes in 2025 heading into the RBC Canadian Open this week. At 71st in the OWGR, if Cole were to be able to crack the top-60 after Canada, he would also get a spot at Oakmont that way.

T44 at the Memorial Tournament Cole closed with a four-over 76 on Sunday at the Memorial Tournament to finish eight-over and tied for 44th.

Impact Cole struggled with his ball striking throughout the weekend at Muirfield Village, where he ultimately ranked just 43rd in SG: Approach and T52 in SG: Off-the-Tee. However, he gained 3.6 strokes around the green while converting 21 of 36 scrambling opportunities. Cole remains 56th in the FedExCup standings ahead of the upcoming RBC Canadian Open.

It's Cole's second top-5 of the year as he continues to play better as the season goes on with four top-20s over his last five starts.

Unable to overcome slow start Sunday Cole finished in solo fifth place at the Sony Open in Hawaii following a two-under 68 in the final round.

Impact Cole started the final round in the last group and just one back of the lead. It would be a very poor start for Cole who made bogey at 2 and then a double-bogey at the 6th hole. To his credit, the former Rookie of the Year came back from that with four straight birdies. Cole then made seven straight pars before cashing in on an easy two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th. It was just two shots shy for Cole of joining the playoff and trying to win his first PGA Tour title. The good for Cole was ranking fifth in SG: Approach and 10th in SG: Putting, but he definitely wants to do better than 57th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 63rd in SG: Around-the-Green. He will play in the American Express next week.

Impact Cole didn't make a single birdie throughout his final 12 holes at Kapalua, ultimately ranking 43rd or worse in every Strokes Gained subcategory Sunday en route to just 12 greens in regulation. He finished the event ranked 54th of 58 in SG: Approach, while also losing 3.291 strokes putting. He'll look to turn it around at the upcoming Sony Open in Hawaii, where he tied for 13th last year when he hit the sixth-most fairways in regulation.
