Shakes off the rust in triumphant return
Hammond was 26-for-33 passing for 298 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 33-10 victory over Abilene Christian.
Impact
Hammond's long-awaited return from a season-ending knee injury was a successful one. While the Red Raiders settled for four field goals and left some points on the field, Hammond consistently moved the offense and finished with an impressive completion rate in his first game action in more than ten months. The highlight of the night was a 64-yard TD strike to Malcolm Simmons late in the fourth quarter that helped put the game away. With the rust seemingly behind him and a talented supporting cast around him, Hammond remains firmly in the QB1 conversation heading into next week's road matchup against Oregon State.

Continues to look sharp
Hammond (knee) continues to look sharp in Texas Tech's practices, Lane Selph of On3.com reports.
Impact
Thursday saw Texas Tech's team continue its fall camp with quarterback passes, and Hammond's throwing arm showed no signs of being physically affected, as he worked well in rhythm with the Red Raiders' top wideouts. All signs point to him being available for Week 1, which will see the Red Raiders host Abilene Christian on Sept. 5. Ideally for Hammond, he can enter the regular season fully healthy and finish it without any health problems, which was not the case in 2025.

Full participant in practice
Hammond (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, according to Jarret Johnson of 247Sports.com.
Impact
Hammond is still sporting a brace coming off an ACL injury, which isn't much of a surprise, but the fact that he was a full participant Tuesday continues to show the star signal-caller is trending in the right direction to be available for the season opener against Abilene Christian on Sep. 5 in Week 1.

Throwing but sporting brace
Hammond (knee) was spotted throwing on the first day of camp Wednesday but was also sporting a brace on his repaired knee, according to Jarret Johnson of 247Sports.
Impact
Hammond is coming off a torn ACL, so he's clearly trending in the right direction, but seeing him with a brace on his knee suggests he might not be fully recovered. Hammond is still expected to be available for the season opener against Abilene Christian on Sep. 5, but his progression in the coming weeks will determine just how ready he is for the campaign opener.

Officially named starter for 2026
Hammond (knee) has officially been named Texas Tech's starter ahead of the 2026 season, per RedRaiderSports.com.
Impact
This was widely expected to be the case in and outside of Lubbock as soon as Brendan Sorsby was deemed ineligible to play due to his gambling scandal. Hammond saw action last fall, tossing for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions on 63.3 percent completion rate while rushing for 299 yards and five touchdowns. However, he's still dealing with a knee injury that's limited his involvement this offseason, although head coach Joey McGuire recently asserted that he expects Hammond to be ready for Week 1.

Should be ready to roll for Week 1
Hammond (knee) is expected to be ready for Week 1, per Chris Hummer of 247Sports.com.
Impact
Red Raiders' head coach Joey McGuire essentially confirmed that the starting gunslinger will be good to go for Texas Tech's Sept. 5 opener against FCS Abilene Christian. "If any of you Red Raiders are out there, Will Hammond will be ready to go Week 1," he said. Hammond was thrust into the starting role this offseason as the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga unfolded and he was blacklisted from college football. Last fall, Hammond looked extremely promising as the backup to Behren Morton, tossing for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions on 63 percent completion while rushing for 299 yards and five touchdowns.

May start Week 1
Hammond (knee) may start Week 1 of Texas Tech's 2026 season, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
Impact
Initially, Hammond's spring timetable indicated that Hammond would be out for at least one game. But when Texas Tech's head coach Joey McGuire was asked about the quarterback being available Week 1, his HC answered, "I think he could be, I really do." There are just under two months before the 2026 Red Raiders begin their regular season Sept. 5 against Abilene Christian, with both him and his team hoping that his updated timetable will include sufficient time.

Returns to throwing
Hammond (knee) has returned to throwing, Pete Nakos of On3.com reports.
Impact
Hammond returning to throwing indicates that he is making at least some progress not long after it was announced that his injured knee would not be ready for the spring. He will become the top guy Texas Tech will watch this summer and fall, especially now that Brendan Sorsby (not injury related) is out indefinitely and undergoing treatment for a gambling addiction. If he cannot play in 2026, that would mean Hammond becomes the Red Raiders' primary option under center, giving him a golden opportunity to break out.

Not full participant in spring
Hammond (knee) isn't a full participant for Texas Tech during the Red Raiders' spring practice, per StakingThePlains.com.
Impact
Hammond is reportedly able to throw and run in a linear fashion, but remains limited as he continues to recover from a non-contact knee injury that ended his season in late October of 2025. The quarterback is expected to be the primary backup to Brendan Sorsby in 2026, but he's yet to return to action in full capacity.

Out for season
Hammond (knee) will miss the remainder of the 2025 regular season with a torn ACL, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.com.
Impact
Hammond had been filling in for fellow quarterback Behren Morton due to an injury to the Texas Tech starter, but Hammond will miss the remainder of the season. The 6-foot-2 signal caller had thrown for 269 yards and three touchdowns with an interception while running for 68 yards and a score on the ground through the team's last two contests before his injury. With Hammond done for the season, Mitch Griffis will likely serve as the primary backup to Morton moving forward.

Exits with non-contact knee injury
Hammond left Saturday's game just prior to half due to an apparent non-contact knee injury, Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports.
Impact
Hammond was replaced by Mitch Griffis at the end of the first half and is on the bench with a hat on to open the second half, while Behren Morton (leg) put his uniform on as the emergency option under center, suggesting Hammond is likely done for the day. If that's the case, Hammond will finish his day 9-for-15 passing for 102 yards and a touchdown, adding four carries for 21 yards.
