Hahsaun Wilson - Rushes for long TD Wilson ran eight time for 117 yards and a touchdown against UT Martin on Saturday.
Impact Sure, after having zero carries in the first game of the season, over 100 yards and a touchdown could change your perception. Maybe it shouldn't, though. Wilson broke off a 94-yard run against an FCS defense, which is slightly fluky. His other seven carries went for 23 yards. The fact he only got eight carries also tells you a lot.

Impact Nelson, once a top prospect, is finally a college starter on his third team. His first start, against Utah State, was subpar. While Nelson did throw four touchdowns, this was against an FCS team. It also took him 26 passes to get to 278 yards and he lost a fumble. His QPR was 53.2. This is hardly enough to quiet the detractors.

Kam Thomas - Not playing in Week 2 Thomas (knee) is not playing in the Week 2 matchup against Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, according to Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times.
Impact Thomas practiced Tuesday and Wednesday, but he's believed to be dealing with a knee injury, meaning UTEP will have to shift things in their backfield. Hahsaun Wilson and Ashten Emory are expected to see an uptick in carries with Thomas out.

Kenny Odom - Bright spot in UTEP opener Odom caught nine passes on 14 targets for 97 yards and a touchdown against Utah State on Saturday. He also ran twice for 16 yards.
Impact Odom was part of the Austin Peay influx at UTEP last season, and he had 46 catches for 741 yards and eight touchdowns. The production was good in this game, but the targets are really encouraging. So is the fact it seems Kam Thomas has been moved to running back. Odom is going to be the guy for the Miners this year.

Hahsaun Wilson - Forget the hype Wilson got zero carries and had one catch for two yards on one target against Utah State on Saturday.
Impact Last year, Wilson averaged 6.1 yards per carry and scored seven touchdowns for Charlotte. He joined UTEP and got a lot of hype after spring. Well, in the Miners' opener he got one touch, and no carries. Four players did get carries. It seems the Wilson hype won't come to fruition.

Kam Thomas - Is Thomas a RB now? Thomas caught four passes for 26 yards, but also ran 16 times for 36 yards Saturday against Utah State.
Impact This is interesting. Thomas has been a wide receiver, and a pretty good one at that. Last year, after joining his head coach in moving from Austin Peay to UTEP, he had 47 catches for 532 yards in nine games. Thomas would carry the ball occasionally, but in the 2025 season opener he comfortably got the most carries of any Miner. Could he now be the team's lead back?

Malachi Nelson - Unremarkable in first college start Nelson went 22-for-34 for 178 yards, one touchdown, and one interception Saturday against Utah State.
Impact This was it. Nelson was once one of the most-vaunted recruits in the country. He went to USC and didn't play. He transferred to Boise and he saw a smattering of mop-up work. Thus, he transferred to UTEP, and he finally won a QB battle. And...he posted a 36.8 QBR in a loss to Utah State. The last modicum of hype and promise has been extinguished.

Impact The move comes as a bit of a surprise as Locklear was expected to earn the starting job heading into the 2025 season. The 5-foot-11 quarterback previously appeared in 10 games for the Miners in 2024, throwing for 1,583 yards and 10 touchdowns to six interceptions along with 237 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Locklear is expected to serve as the primary backup at least to start the season behind Nelson.

Impact Nelson was reported earlier this fall camp to be making a push for the starting role, and it appears he's had quite the preseason as he's locked down UTEP's starting quarterback gig, beating out returnee Skyler Locklear, who was considered the favorite to start just over a week ago. Nelson, who began his career at USC and spent the 2024 season as a backup with Boise State, tossed for 128 yards and one interception last year.
