Impact It is not hyperbolic to say Gagliano may have saved head coach Derek Mason's job. MTSU was careening toward an 1-11 record with holdover QB Nicholas Vattiato under center. Mason, admittedly pressed by a Vattiato injury, turned to the redshirt freshman Gagliano. In three starts he threw for five passes, ran for over 150 yards with two rushing scores, and didn't turn the ball over. Oh, and MTSU won twice.

Impact Gagliano will get another start with starting quarterback Nicholas Vattiato (undisclosed) ruled out this week. The redshirt freshman quarterback has tossed for over 250 yards in back-to-back games along with three touchdowns and no turnovers.

Even if Vattiato is ready to play next week, Gagliano should start. Derek Mason's only hope of keeping his job as head coach is showing Gagliano's promise and being able to keep him from transferring.

Impact You're Derek Mason. You're coaching for your job and the season is going poorly. Why did it take this long for the redshirt freshman you recruited to get a start instead of trotting out longtime MTSU quarterback Nicholas Vattiato again and again? This was impressive from Gagliano. Of course, MTSU still lost 42-26 and Mason is still going to get fired, but Gagliano came out looking good.
