North Texas Names Ex-Indiana QB Tayven Jackson Week 1 Starter Against Hoosiers
Chris Jimerson Jr. - Not named starting QB Jimerson will not be North Texas' starting quarterback Sept. 5 at Indiana for Week 1, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
Impact Jimerson spent the fall battling two transferred quarterbacks for the mantle of QB1 going into North Texas' 2026 season. In the end, he lost to the most experienced member of the trio, Tayven Jackson. There is a chance that Jimerson's statistical production can improve from 2025, but it will not be easy, as behind Jackson is another competitor in East Carolina transfer Chaston Ditta. For the former to show any promise, he will have to impress over Ditta and keep Jackson on his toes.

Impact Even though Ditta holds experience from his time at East Carolina, North Texas' coaching staff opted for the more experienced Tayven Jackson to start under center at Indiana, the latter's previous college as well. Considering that Ditta's first-year experience is just under 25 pass attempts, there is a legitimate chance that the sophomore quarterback can surpass his previous season's statistical production even if Jackson maintains the QB1 role long-term. With the Pirates, Ditta completed 12 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns.

Impact Going into the 2026 season, North Texas' quarterback position boiled down to three options, two of them more experienced transfers. Jackson logged a lot more experience, both in 2025 and before, culminating in a UCF season with 200 completed passes for 2,151 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jackson's primary issue that year was turnovers, as he logged the same number of TOs as passing TDs, with eight interceptions and two fumbles lost. The quarterback will look to prove he cleaned his passing up, and doing so against his first team Indiana, would be icing on the cake.

Impact White suffered the injury at the beginning of last year's season with West Virginia, appearing in just two games for the Mountaineers. The 5-foot-7 running back was impactful in his short time on the field in 2025, running for 133 yards and three touchdowns on 5.5 YPC across his two appearances. White is likely to be a major contributor for the Mean Green once he works his way onto the field, and though he is likely to continue being limited up until the start of the season, signs are indicating he may be ready to lead the backfield soon.

Impact Jackson has been viewed as the leader for the starting job with North Texas as the start of the 2026 season draws closer, and Brown's statements made it clear that's still the case. The 6-foot-4 signal caller transferred in from UCF in the offseason, where he threw for 2,151 yards and 10 touchdowns to eight interceptions across 11 games last season. Brown indicated that the team may continue to wait to make an official announcement, but every indication is that Jackson is the likeliest candidate to lead the offense to start the 2026 season.

Impact Vito posted a vertical video of White using his injured knee to practice a run. All that the North Texas running back needs to clear his injury status is engage in contact, and it should ready him for UNT's 2026 season. White improves to probable for Sept. 5 at Indiana.

Nick Osho - In line for bigger role? Osho is seen as one of three under-the-radar players who could fill a key role for North Texas this season, according to Brett Vito of The Denton Record-Chronicle.
Impact Osho figures to be a depth option in the backfield in 2026, and while he sits behind both Jahiem White (knee) and Brendon Haygood, Osho could be in line for a bigger role, especially if White isn't 100 percent healthy for the season opener against Indiana on Sep. 5. Osho spent the 2025 season at Indiana State and enjoyed a breakout year last term, running for 685 yards and eight touchdowns on 5.8 YPC. He also added 10 receptions for 42 yards and a score through the air.

Impact White was able to participate in some drills towards the end of camp but there is still not a clear answer if he's ready to suit up to begin the season. The fact that the tailback was able to compete in the camp is a good sign for the Mean Green. The running back missed most of the 2025 season with West Virginia due to a knee injury and transferred to North Texas back in January.
