Impact Houser took over the offense late in the second quarter after Jake Garcia threw his 12th interception through six games this season. Houser was unable to stake a claim for the starting job though as he completed fewer than 40 percent of his passes and failed to reach 100 yards through the air. Garcia will likely remain the starter, but if his turnover problems continue than Houser could see another opportunity.

Set for backup role Houser will open the season as the backup quarterback for East Carolina after Jake Garcia was named the starting signal-caller, Stephen Igoe of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact Houser was competing with Garcia for the starting role, but he was the odd man out, so he'll have to settle for a bench role in the opening stages of the campaign. A Michigan State transfer, Houser appeared in 11 games with the Spartans last year, throwing for 1,130 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Despite turning the ball over twice, the redshirt freshman quarterback threw for a career-high 245 yards to go with his first career three-touchdown performance. Logs three scores in starting debut Houser was 18-for-29 passing for 133 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 27-24 loss versus Rutgers. He also had eight rushes for 27 yards with one touchdown.

Impact Houser performed well during his starting debut. The redshirt freshman wasn't asked to do much as a passer, averaging just 4.6 yards per attempt, but he did cap off two well-managed scoring drives with touchdown passes of 13 and four yards in the first and third quarters, respectively. Houser also provided added benefit with his legs, including a 12-yard touchdown run for his longest carry of the day. Houser's three incompletions on his final four passes of the game did contribute to Michigan State blowing a 24-6 lead in the second half. Nevertheless, Houser's all-around encouraging debut should keep him in as the starting quarterback for what will be a difficult matchup versus the in-state rival Wolverines this coming Saturday.
