Takes starting reps in spring game Harrell took the first reps under center in the 11-on-11 portion of UNC Charlotte's spring game, per the Charlotte Observer.

Impact All signs seem to point to Harrell as the favorite to start for the 49ers. He spent the previous two years at North Carolina, where he was limited member of the offense, appearing in just 10 total games and tossing for four touchdowns, three interceptions and 552 yards. Still, he seems to have found a program where he can start from Week 1.

Joins UNC-Charlotte Harrell has announced his commitment to Charlotte ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Impact Harrell will join the 49ers this offseason after spending the last two seasons with North Carolina. The 6-foot-2 sophomore quarterback threw for 552 yards (43-of-70), four touchdowns and three interceptions during his time with the Tarheels, adding on 38 carries for 130 yards and two scores on the ground.

Impact Harrell will seek a new home, a decision that's not all that surprising considering he was benched in Week 3 and only attempted two passes after that. All told, the quarterback tossed for 282 yards, two touchdowns and one interception while completing 56.8 percent of his passes. He'll have two years of eligibility remaining.

Officially demoted to QB2 Harrell will be North Carolina's backup quarterback after it announced Jacolby Criswell will start in Week 4 against James Madison, Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.com reports.

Impact Harrell was benched in UNC's blowout win over North Carolina Central, but not because the Tar Heels were up big. He got off to a sluggish start, completing 2 of 6 passes for 22 yards through two drives. That led head coach Mack Brown to turn to Criswell, and he immediately out-performed Harrell. Now, he's been relegated to QB2 duties for the foreseeable future.

Impact After opening the game with two drives that resulted in just one first down, Harrell was benched and replaced by Jacolby Criswell.
