Impact Jace Ruder is the clear QB1 in Denton despite throwing for 131 yards and two picks in the opener. Aune attempted just five passes and will be the backup against the Mustangs.

Starting season on bench Aune will begin the season as a backup Saturday versus Northwestern State, Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle reports.

Impact Aune completed 54.6 percent of his passes last year for 1,650 yards and a 13:4 TD:INT ratio while splitting time with Jason Bean. While Bean has transferred away from the Mean Green, the team also added Jace Ruder from North Carolina, who will get the starting nod, though that doesn't rule out the possibility that he will also see some time under center.

Impact Aune finished the 2020 regular season as the Mean Green's starter at quarterback before missing North Texas' Myrtle Beach Bowl loss to Appalachian State in December due to an undisclosed injury. He returned healthy for spring and fall camp, but Aune apparently didn't do enough to separate himself from Ruder -- a North Carolina transfer -- in the competition. Both quarterbacks could see reps Saturday against an overmatched Northwestern State, but Aune's status as the incumbent could mean that he's the first signal-caller out of the chute.
