Lipscomb renews Middle Tennessee rivalry with 84-74 win

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Garrison Mathews led four players scoring in double figures with 29 points and Lipscomb beat Middle Tennessee 84-74 on Saturday night.

Rob Marberry scored 12 and Kenny Cooper and Ahsan Asadullah each scored 10 as the Bisons (6-1) won in a series that had taken an 11-year break. It was Lipscomb's first win in the series since Jan. 12, 1961.

Middle Tennessee (3-5) led 38-37 at halftime. Out of the break, Matthews and Cooper each made jump shots and Eli Pepper had a pair of free throws and Lipscomb never trailed again. Lipscomb controlled the interior, outscoring the Blue Raiders 32-22.

Antonio Green tied a career-high 30 points for the Blue Raiders and Jayce Johnson scored 16.

The series started in 1937, and Middle Tennessee now leads the series 32-20. The Blue Raiders beat Lipscomb 68-62 in the last game played between the two on Nov. 16, 2007.
