Won't return this season Coach Bob Huggins said Friday that Tshiebwe (personal) won't be rejoining West Virginia this season, Nick Farrell of WVIllustrated.com reports.

Impact It was reported earlier Friday that the sophomore forward was stepping away from the program, and it now appears to be a permanent move. Tshiebwe averaged 11.2 points and 9.3 rebounds as a freshman last year, but over 10 games in 2020-21 he was averaging 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds. There were already rumors he may pursue a transfer, and that now seems even more likely.

Steps away from program Tshiebwe stepped away from the West Virginia basketball program Friday, citing personal reasons, Jeff Borzello of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Tshiebwe didn't disclose how long he'll be away from the Mountaineers, but his decision comes amid rumors that the big man might pursue a transfer. With that in mind, the sophomore appears unlikely to return to the program anytime soon, if at all. Tshiebwe had averaged 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds through the Mountaineers' first 10 games, well down from his averages of 11.2 and 9.3, respectively, as a freshman.

Flashes per-minute production Tshiebwe had 12 points (6-9 FG) and 15 rebounds across 21 minutes in Tuesday's 73-51 victory over Northeastern.

Impact This is the type of performance fantasy players have been waiting for throughout the month of December, though it's a bit concerning that it only came against a much lesser opponent. Tshiebwe has been generally inconsistent this season, due occasionally to foul trouble, but also to the play of Gabe Osabuohien off the bench. The Mountaineers did take a hit to their post depth with the announcement that Isaiah Cottrell (Achilles) would miss the rest of the season, but his 5.6 mpg shouldn't move the needle much for Tshiebwe. The good news here is that this is a glimmer of hope for players rostering Tshiebwe, as his fantasy stock had otherwise been plummeting heading into Big 12 play.

Impact Tshiebwe has had a decent start to the season, but some were expecting a little more after a strong freshman campaign. Derek Culver has taken the lead in the frontcourt through the first five games, averaging 15.4 PPG and 10.8 RPG to Tshiebwe's 9.2 PPG and 8.2 RPG. Gabe Osabuohien has also got a decent amount of run off the bench for coach Bob Huggins. Tshiebwe is still extremely talented and could post some monster lines any given night. They will take on Robert Morris on Wednesday.
