Houston embraces a 'home' Sweet 16 game at Toyota Center as Illinois arrives unfazed

Houston is in the Sweet 16 for a seventh straight season, and this trip might be its sweetest yet

Offensive awakening Tugler racked up 20 points (9-15 FG, 2-3 FT), 10 rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal in 35 minutes during Saturday's 79-74 loss to Arizona.

Impact Tugler put together a career-best offensive performance during the Big 12 championship game, reaching 20 points for the first time in his career while adding 10 boards for his third double double of the season. The junior forward added three assists while also adding his usual stellar defensive play with a steal and a block, though the second-seeded Cougars fell to the top-seeded Wildcats. Tugler, who's always been regarded as one of the top defenders in the country, is in the midst of an offensive awakening of late, reaching double figures in five of his last six games and averaging 13.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks during that stretch. His season average of 8.4 points represents a new career-best mark, as does a field-goal percentage of 58.9 while shooting 69.6-percent from the charity stripe after percentages of 46.3 and 53.8 across his first two seasons in Houston.

Impact Tugler stuffed the stat sheet, reaching double figures in the scoring column for the fourth-consecutive game while adding eight boards, four helpers, four steals and a couple of rejections as Houston survived to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament. It was the fifth time this season Tugler has recorded multiple blocks and thefts in the same game and while the defensive stalwart typically makes his living on that side of the floor, it's his recent spunk on the offensive end that is providing the Cougars with an extra boost. Tugler had failed to reach double figures in nine of 10 games prior to this recent stretch in which he's putting up eight shots per game as opposed to the 2.8 he was taking during that anemic 10-game streak.

The junior forward came off the bench for the first time this season as Kalifa Sakho received the start on senior night. The Cougars are hoping this recent spark is a sign of things to come as Tugler has seen a precipitous drop in his production in recent weeks. Even with the success over the last two games, Tugler is averaging just 6.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks across his last 12 games.

Impact Tugler is the perfect example of a player who has far more real-life value as a leader and a defender than he does in fantasy circles. He did have a streak of four straight games in double figures in January, but in the seven games since, he's averaged just 5.6 ppg. At least he's been efficient, as that low-scoring run has came along with a solid shooting percentage of 73.7.

Tugler found himself in foul trouble early, riding the pine for the final 13:50 of the first half, then followed a similar script in the second half, picking up his fourth foul with 13:41 remaining. While it was not the first scoreless performance of his career, it was the first time he failed to dent the box score. There's no indication this was anything more than an off night for the 6-foot-8 forward and he'll look to rebound when Houston hosts Cincinnati on Saturday.

Seven of Tugler's 10 rebounds came on the offensive end as he saw 34 minutes of court time, setting a new season-best mark during the tight win. Tugler remains a defensive fiend but has not taken the big step forward on the offensive end that the Cougars had envisioned for this year. However, he is showing some signs as of late, averaging 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds to go along with 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocks over his past three contests.

Impact While Tugler is known more for his defense, the offensive game still hasn't developed as expected in 2025-26. That's due partially to foul trouble, which limited his minutes again here.
