Excellent option off bench Gainey finished Tuesday's 75-62 win over Miami (FL) with eight points (3-6 FG, 2-5 3Pt), five rebounds and two blocks in 29 minutes.

Impact When you have a bench player averaging 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals, you tend to have an excellent team. Hence the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers. Gainey has been incredibly efficient as well, shooting 50 percent from the field and 37.5 from deep. Gainey is looking like the ultimate glue guy in Knoxville.

Leading scorer off bench Gainey produced 16 points (7-9 FG, 2-4 3Pt), two rebounds, one assist and three steals over 28 minutes during Monday's 80-64 victory over Gardner-Webb.

Impact Gainey didn't get the start, but he played the third-most minutes on the team and was Tennessee's second-leading scorer. The guard appeared in 36 games last season but only averaged 6.8 minutes. It appears Gainey could be slated for a sixth man role or potentially more in Knoxville this season.

Backup PG during exhibition Gainey was the Volunteers' backup at point guard during their closed-door scrimmage this past week, Mike Wilson of The Knoxville News Sentinel reports.

Impact Backup PG is expected to be Gainey's role again for his 2024-25 season as Zakai Zeigler remains enrolled at Tennessee. The role also calls for him to be UT's sixth man, which he served as with an average of 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists on 18.3 minutes for the 2023-24 Volunteers.

Impactful off bench Gainey racked up 15 points (3-13 FG, 3-10 3Pt, 6-7 FT), two rebounds, two assists and one steal over 25 minutes during Tuesday's 71-67 loss to Purdue.

Impact Gainey has been a key reserve for the Vols, as he's logged exactly 25 minutes in three consecutive games and reached double-figure scoring in four of five contests this season. His efficiency leaves a bit to be desired as a 34.0 percent shooter, but at least the volume is there, as Tuesday was the second time this season he's attempted 10 three-pointers. What's concerning is that he's gone a bit cold as the level of competition as risen, as he's just 4-for-20 from the field in the Maui Invitational. He'll have a chance to right the ship Wednesday in a third-place game against Kansas.

Impact Gainey got the opportunity to start with both Zakai Zeigler (knee) and Santiago Vescovi (personal) sidelined for the contest. While he likely heads back to the bench when the Vols are at full strength, Gainey's play here was a testament to the team's depth. It wasn't all positive, however, as Gainey matched his assist total with six of the team's 20 turnovers, in addition to committing four personal fouls. Still, the makings of a valuable sixth man are here.
