Furman tops Mercer in SoCon Tourney quarterfinal
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — JP Pegues had 22 points in Furman's 73-58 victory against Mercer on Saturday in a Southern Conference Tournament matchup.
Pegues shot 7 for 11 (4 for 7 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the free throw line for the Paladins (25-7). Mike Bothwell was 5 of 9 shooting, including 1 for 3 from distance, and went 2 for 3 from the line to add 13 points. Jalen Slawson recorded 12 points and finished 5 of 9 from the field.
The Bears (14-19) were led in scoring by Jalyn McCreary, who finished with 18 points. Mercer also got eight points and eight rebounds from James Glisson III.
Pegues scored eight points in the first half and Furman went into halftime trailing 32-29. Furman pulled off the victory after a 22-2 second-half run erased a five-point deficit and gave them the lead at 51-36 with 11:54 to go.
